Yesterday’s performance was truly wonderful — and there is still one more opportunity to hear String Talk live.
Join us this afternoon at St Andrews Church at 5 pm for our final concert, featuring music by Bach, Pergolesi, Górecki, Vivaldi and Nielsen. We invite you to experience an afternoon of beautiful chamber music in an intimate and welcoming setting.

Wonderful - and Natania is from Kaikoura! 😃

Trombonist Natania Ngawhau grew up in Kaikōura in what she calls a "very non-musical background" and is now in her first year of a Master of Music in Orchestral Performance at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City.

Supported by the Jack McGill Scholarship, she is studying in a programme that takes just 35 students a year, with weekly lessons from the associate principal trombone of the New York Philharmonic.

Her advice for young musicians considering the leap: "Believe that things can happen. You cannot just sit there and wait for them. You have to make your own opportunities... apply for funding, apply for all of the things."

Read Natania's story and learn about the Jack McGill Scholarship (applications close April 1) ➡ https://creativenz.govt.nz/news-and-blog/2026/03/19/01/02/21/from-kaikoura-to-new-york

We want to thank our fabulous local sponsor, The Fulton Foundation for helping us with funding for special aspects of our 10th Anniversary Concerts we could not otherwise have afforded. They supported Michael Tsalka our fabulous international pianist, Tony Ferner our conductor and a special composition for MCO's 10th "Tenfold" by ex local musician and composer Kodi Rasmussen. Kodi played with the orchestra as a youth and kindly joined us on stage in the anniversary concerts playing trumpet so it was great having that special connection even as he continues his professional career internationally. As many may know, the Fulton Foundation are enthusiastic supporters of local musicians of all types and we are very fortunate and proud to have their support. This support makes a huge difference, as young professional musicians like Kodi can testify to, and encourages us to continue to help educate future young musicians coming up through Upbeat our training orchestra and then MCO. Thanks again Fulton folks - we appreciate you!! 😃🤩😍

Cellist, composer and teacher Caitlin Morris, along with her husband, Andrew Atkins, a pianist, conductor and teacher, found Kahutara in the South Wairarapa to be the perfect place to call home. Now, as co-founders of the Wairarapa Youth Orchestra, they are nurturing a new generation of musicians.
