Ladies and gentlemen,
The Freedom Camping Act 2011 is often misunderstood as a free pass to camp anywhere and this entitlement that it must be free, But let's be real – the act is about responsible camping, not free-for-all chaos 😅.
The act is the guidelines for councils to make bylaws and a reference to our legal rights when dealing with the bylaws, the bylaws have to be consistent with the freedom camping Act 2011 and both bylaws and the Freedom camping ACT has to be consistent with the New Zealand bill of rights and New Zealand human rights act.
Government Acts are law…
- Regulations are key, The act sets guidelines for councils to write bylaws to protect our environment and ensure public spaces remain accessible. Without this act we’d see councils carpet ban camping as we’ve seen them do, especially with tenting.
- Designated areas matter: Freedom camping isn't about pitching up anywhere; it's about using designated spots that can handle the impact 🚧 in other words the councils provide the infrastructure in their jurisdiction that campers need.. the space, toilets, rubbish bins and wash up areas which the general public can use (those not self contained to minimise their impact in the same areas.
- Costs are involved: Even "free" spots often come with hidden costs like maintenance, toilets, and waste disposal 🚮. Someone's paying for it and you have to pay to get there.
So, there's no "free" in freedom camping – it's about respecting the land, the rules, and each other 🙌
Most importantly have fun 🤩
