Dementia ain’t here to play.

I voice noted my best friend buying these and had a cry 😂

Hours later, I feel better.

Some days you feel like you’ve got the routines on lock and then the disease sees you’re on the roll and kicks you in the butt. Right after church too.

I cried all the way to the shops, during my voice note and on the way back to mum and dads … and then I hopped out of the car and fought super hard to get straight into clean up. Flaws on flaws because i just wanted to walk away. But trying hard every day to remind myself that “this is your assignment”

Grateful for best friends. One of whom is my husband. Never hesitates, never questions, never judges. He just looks at his wife and gets right into the THICK of things.

Lord, Let me see you in all of this…because today I struggled.

Dementia is often misunderstood as simply a matter of memory loss, but its impact is far more profound. It’s about losing the person you knew and loved, and gradually getting to know a new individual. This journey is marked by a mix of emotions - sadness, grief, and even joy.

There are moments of quiet despair, when the weight of your loss settles in, and tears flow uncontrollably. Yet, there are also times of laughter and delight, as you discover the quirks and humor of the person your loved one is becoming.

As time passes, you find yourself wondering where the years have gone. You reminisce about the days when your mum was a source of guidance and support, and now you’re the one caring for her every need. The early morning routines, the cold coffee, and the sacrifices become a new normal.

Dementia, where did you come from? Where have you taken my mum? I loved her then, and I love her now, but most of all, I miss her. I miss the person she used to be, and the relationship we once shared. Yet, even in the midst of this journey, I’m grateful for the moments we still share, and the love that remains…

Love you mama ❤️

Tālofa and welcome to Mānava - a supportive community focused on dementia in Pacific communities. Mānava, meaning 'breathe' in Sāmoan, serves as a reminder for carers to take a step back, pause, and prioritize their own well-being.

As a carer myself, I understand the importance of seeking guidance and support. My mother's journey with vascular dementia, which began approximately 10 years ago, has been a learning experience for our entire family. We're still navigating this challenging path and gaining insight into the disease.

Mānava is an inclusive space where individuals can ask questions, share experiences, and connect with others without fear of judgment or stigma. Our goal is to foster a sense of community and understanding, promoting empathy and support for all.

Afio mai! Let's come together, share our stories, and build a supportive network through Talanoa. Welcome to Mānava, where we breathe, learn, and grow together.
