A Historic New Chapter for Panjabi in New Zealand

With Guru Sahib’s blessings, the Institute of Sikh Studies New Zealand (ISSNZ) celebrated a historic milestone on 25 July 2026 at Gurdwara Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib, Papatoetoe.

ISSNZ has become New Zealand’s first Sikh organisation registered with NZQA as a Private Training Establishment and is approved to deliver the Certificate in Panjabi Language (Level 3)—a 60-credit NZQA-approved programme.

The Shukrana Samagam began with the collective recitation of Salok Mahalla 9 by more than 35 ISSNZ students, followed by Raagmala, Anand Sahib, Ardas, Shabad Kirtan and Hukamnama. The confidence and discipline demonstrated by our young students beautifully reflected the strength and future of Sikhi, Gurbani and the Panjabi language in New Zealand.

We were honoured by the presence of chief guest Hon Jenny Salesa Jenny Salesa MP, respected Sikh leaders, community organisations, educators, media representatives and Sangat from Auckland, Hamilton and other parts of New Zealand.

Together, we have created history. Together, we will carry Panjabi language, Sikhi and our rich heritage forward to future generations.
