New Zealand's World Cup story wasn't just about the players on the field.

Campbell-Kirk Kawana-Waugh, Referee Manager at WaiBOP Football Federation, is the only match referee from the Oceania region at this World Cup - one of just 52 referees picked from six confederations worldwide.

He took charge as fourth official through the group stage, including Czechia v South Africa and Germany v Ecuador. Fellow Kiwi Isaac Trevis was right there with him too, one of 88 assistant referees at the tournament, and the only Oceania appointment in his category.

It's a long road that started on the grass in the Waikato, with stops
refereeing the Chatham Cup final in 2017, the same day his wife Anna-Marie Keighley took charge of the Women's Knockout Cup final - a first for a Kiwi husband-and-wife pair. From there: FIFA U-20 World Cups, the Club World Cup, the Paris Olympics, and now the biggest stage in football.

Refereeing is a pathway that can take you to extraordinary places, and it starts exactly where you'd expect: a Saturday morning game, a nervous first whistle - someone willing to give it a go.

That's what the Green Shirt programme is all about - removing the barriers so more people give refereeing a go. Maybe the next World Cup Final will be refereed by a Kiwi.

Term's wrapping up and the holidays are kicking off - and from where we sit in the Tuia Waitākere office, we're already hearing about the clubs and schools across west Auckland gearing up to keep kids active over the break.

It's a good reminder of what actually keeps the game going for a lot of tamariki: a holiday programme that doesn't cost the earth, a club willing to run a free clinic, a coach giving up their break. That's exactly what our Ball Distribution initiative helps with - getting footballs into the hands of kids who need them, no cost attached.
