🌸 Introducing this Saturday’s stallholder – Noel Townsley
Noel is a dedicated member of the New Zealand Orchid Society and has been growing orchids for more than 50 years. Over the decades, he has earned numerous awards and placings at orchid shows, reflecting both his passion and expertise.
Noel believes orchids are far less difficult to grow than many people assume. With a little knowledge and by choosing varieties suited to your environment, they can be incredibly rewarding.
Although he considers himself a hobbyist, Noel cares for over 1,000 plants. He enjoys seeking out unusual species, resulting in a stunningly diverse collection.
By selecting orchids that bloom at different times of the year, Noel ensures that he has at least one orchid is always in flower, every single day.
Generous with his knowledge, Noel is always happy to advise newcomers to orchid growing. He has shared his expertise through presentations to horticultural groups connected with the AHC, as well as other orchid clubs.
At his stall, Noel will have some of his flowering orchids on show and will be offering for sale, a selection of easy-to-grow orchids, along with the ever-popular NZ Orchid Society’s specially prepared orchid bark—perfect for a wide range of orchid types.

Introducing this Saturday's stallholder - Māra Plants

Hera and Mark run Māra Plants from their home in Mangere Bridge. They both grew up with a love of gardening inspired by family members.

After visiting the AHC Spring Show in 2024, they were encouraged to try selling their excess plants. The couple's first show was the AHC Sweet Pea Show a few months later. They enjoyed it so much that they have started selling regularly at Mangere Bridge Market and other events.

Hera and Mark are both keen on growing Heritage varieties and always aim to have some that are a bit different. Mark grows the edibles, especially tomatoes. This year, he is growing nearly 40 different varieties!

Hera loves (is obsessed with) flowers and has a cottage garden where she grows her softer shades, such as larkspur, verbascum, scabious, dianthus, old-fashioned roses, phlox, and many more. In contrast, she also has a Jewel Garden (homage to Monty Don). This is a vibrant kaleidoscope of colours, including rudbeckias, salvias and penstemons.

Both gardens feature dahlias; Hera is especially fond of collarettes. This year, she has grown many from seed, enjoying the thrill of the unknown. Meanwhile, Mark prefers the symmetry of the pom-poms.

Their stall on Saturday will offer a wide selection of plants, including annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, 18 varieties of tomatoes, and dahlia seedlings. Additionally, there will be a few particularly special flower plants - Rudbeckia maxima and Dahlia Bumble Rumble (a well-sized tuber-grown plant).
