📚 ELSA’s Lecture Series is officially kicking off!

We are super excited to announce that our first guest lecturer for the series will be Justin Sobion, joining us on Tuesday 2 June at 6pm in Room 810-332.

The lecture series is a great opportunity to hear from legal academics, gain insight into different areas of environment law, and connect with fellow students in a more informal setting. We’re looking forward to starting the series with what promises to be a really engaging session!

ℹ️ Climate Response Bill - what you need to know!

The Government has announced proposed amendments to the Climate Change Response Act 2002 that would limit tort claims for climate change related harm, including claims like Smith v Fonterra.

The proposal raises major questions about accountability, access to justice and the role of the courts in responding to the climate crisis. While the Government argues the changes will provide ‘commercial certainty’ for businesses, critics warn they could shield major emitters from liability and remove an important avenue for climate litigation in Aotearoa.

➡️ Swipe through to learn more about what this means for climate litigation, the common law and environmental accountability in New Zealand!

RMA Reform Submissions Party!

When: Monday 2 Feb | 7PM–8PM
Where: via Zoom (link in bio - please sign up to the registration link!)

What: The Resource Management Act 1991 is undergoing reform (again). The Environment Committee is currently accepting submissions on the Planning Bill and Natural Environment Bill until Friday 4.30PM, 13 February.

As the Bills stand, they have major implications for how Māori interests are considered within the resource management regime, and risk further isolating the ways the rights of taiao and the rights of Māori can be upheld or argued for. We encourage everyone to get involved, attend this submissions workshop, and learn how to write a submission against these proposals.

We’ll also be joined by student co-authors of the recent interview-commentary report:
“Resource Management Act Reform and Mana Wāhine: The importance of Mana Wāhine and Te Tiriti o Waitangi in resource management” who will present their findings and how they can inform how we approach writing submissions.

Come write with us! No previous knowledge of resource management law necessary. This workshop is for everyone.
