What a ride! The last period has been filled with hundreds of visitors sharing stories on the vaka and it's impact on our lives. I think I've used up all my words for the year! Talked out! Yet there is much more to share!

Thank you to everyone who has so far visited our carving location at The Otara Kai Village where we have been working on larger sized vakas on route to building the water going one to launch in Otara waters!

Thank you to the community support including Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board contribution to a portion of the project as we work with locals to carve, to talanoa, to build life and vaka together.

We are continuing onward! If you see us working away, come and say hi. My favourite coffee is a flatwhite 😁

⚒️This vaka is a Niue model, and is my introduction to the vaka building culture.

I have never built one before at this scale on my own and this is my learning how to build a full size. The next vaka will be a full size Niue canoe. The wood that I use for this vaka is treated pine wood salvaged from a retaining wall post. It is not a canoe building wood, but I chose to use it because that is what I have access to at the moment. It is only for learning purpose and not for water use.

🌊The next, will be for the water!
I’ve been carving this at my new location with locals at Otara Kai Village. This has helped tell people what we’ve been up to. So many good conversations!!

I would like to say a huge thank you to the Wooden Boat Festival, Michelle and the Team for your kind invitation to feature our pacific vakas here. To be amongst 20k people floating through this festival and sharing their appreciation for the ocean going vessels and our many designs, it was an honour to exhibit the designs from the pacific here.
