Hey everyone πŸ‘‹

We have been contacted by a resident who is taking legal proceedings against Auckland Council over the categorization they received for their property. If you would like to be connected with him for more information for your own circumstances, please send us a message.

Hey everyone! πŸ‘‹

We've had some messages from people recently who've tried to email WAIF for help for their situations. Our website and email have been closed for some time so the best way to contact us is through messaging the WAIF page here. We will do our very best to help. Lyall.

Hey! πŸ‘‹

An incredible piece in the NZ Herald this morning highlighting the Auckland Council's approval of 4,000 new homes in floodplains SINCE the 2023 floods. A massive well done to the Huapai residents pushing back against development of these new builds. A must read!

Auckland Council says its hands are tied by planning laws, which will change soon.

06/06/2025

Hey! πŸ‘‹

Auckland Council has consented 4,000 homes in flood plains since January '23. To help advocate against people being potentially put in harms way through this, a journalist is looking for people who have purchased a new build home on a flood plain since the 2023 floods or someone whose new home on a flood plain was flooded in 2023.

If this is you or someone you may know, please flick me a Facebook message to our WAIF page.

Thanks heaps!
Lyall

In response to Auckland Council announcing plans around what they are going to do with land previously flooded - you can read that HERE https://tinyurl.com/45fa3y22 I said that "I'd like the mayor... to come up and front up, and listen to flood-impacted Westies about what they want done for their communities."

The Mayor has rejected this invitation to come and listen to the Westie flood impacted residents telling media that he has visited West Auckland numerous times since the 2023 floods.

You can read my response to the Mayor below.

Join the WAIF team, Phil Twyford and many more at this panel discussion about the Auckland Anniversary Floods and what we must do individually and as a community to be prepared for ever increasing weather events. Thanks to our WAIF committee members Amrita and Rup who will be sharing their story and solutions and the Waitākere Ethic Board for hosting this important discussion.

If you are interested in how our cities cope with climate change, join me at this panel discussion tomorrow/Wednesday. I'll be talking about the Anniversary Weekend floods and their impact on urban West Auckland: what happened, how community, Council and Government responded, and challenges for the future. (Thanks Waitakere Ethnic Board)

A massive proposal for the KumeΕ« community. This again increases the urgency for Auckland council to stop allowing building consents in flood plains/flood zones (1415 were consented in 2024) so that more communities don't have to suffer from life impacting flooding and weather events. Enough is enough.

Auckland Council is considering moving KumeΕ« after finding no other viable solutions.

17/02/2025

Auckland Council is taking further action to protect homes from flooding with the Transport, Resilience and Infrastructure Committee endorsing a major flood resilience project for Clover Drive in Rānui.
