We couldn't go racing or rallying without the volunteers and officials who power our sport.

October is FIA Volunteers and Officials Month, and we're using it to say a proper thank you to everyone who gives up their weekends to make motorsport happen in New Zealand. The marshals out on the bank in all weathers, the officials in race control, the timekeepers, scrutineers, medical crews, club helpers, and everyone in-between who keeps every event running safely.

You are an inspiration, and everyone at MotorSport New Zealand thanks you for making motorsport possible.

What a great day at Hampton Downs for the NZIGP Endurance Racing Icebreaker! 🏁

For me, it was especially good to be back in Race Control — very much my happy place! There’s something pretty special about being in the middle of it all, working alongside a great team and watching a race meeting come together.

The weather certainly threw a few challenges our way, but I guess that’s why they call it the Icebreaker! It kept Race Control, our officials and the teams on their toes and gave us plenty to work with throughout the day.

It was fantastic to see TA2 NZ kick off their Championship, with Elite Academy winner Chris White Motorsport taking a clean sweep. And how good was it to see so many young guns out there cutting laps? There’s some seriously exciting young talent coming through our sport.

Player of the day, though, has to go to Nick Mitchell and his team. They took out the 400k race on a bold one-stop strategy, and what a finish it was.

With the race ultimately finishing at 153 laps rather than on time, the cards fell their way — but they still had to make the strategy work. They crossed the line with the hard-charging Ball family entry right there and, incredibly, with only around half a litre of fuel left in the tank! That’s cutting it about as fine as you possibly can. Brilliant strategy and ex*****on from the whole team.

But my biggest shout-out has to go to our volunteers and officials. ❤️

Motorsport simply doesn’t happen without you. Early starts, long days, changing weather and plenty going on behind the scenes — and you just get on with it. From the flag points and recovery crews to pit lane, dummy grid, scrutineering, timing, administration and my fellow crew in Race Control, thank you.

I headed home tonight tired, happy and reminded again why I love this sport and the people in it so much.

Great racing, great people and a pretty awesome day at the track.

Thanks NZIGP Events — that was fun! 🏁❤️

The Chicane Racewear Volunteer of the Year recognises a member of The Motorsport Club who consistently demonstrates commitment, leadership, and dedication - with this year’s recipient also earning the opportunity to head to Highlands.

This year’s recipient has shown all three qualities in abundance.

Their motorsport journey began in rally, where they have continued to work their way through the ranks with Rally New Zealand. They are a valued member of the Zero Car Team and have recently been invited to take on another significant role as part of the wider executive team.

They became involved with The Motorsport Club, beginning as an Event Volunteer at Supercars Pukekohe before continuing to build their experience on the sporting side.

They have since grown through a range of roles, including Startline, CRO, and Accident Investigation. However, their contribution begins long before the first car heads onto the track.

Throughout the past season, this year’s recipient has been an incredible support during pre-event setup, taking responsibility for managing sign on, ensuring the day gets off to a smooth start.

Their willingness to step up, take responsibility, support others, and continue learning makes them an incredibly deserving recipient.

Congratulations to the 2026 Chicane Racewear Volunteer of the Year, Alex Fenn. 🥳

The Bruce Anderson Memorial Trophy honours Bruce’s legacy and recognises the passion, empowerment, resilience, and dedication he brought to our sport.

This year’s recipient has been a long-standing member of the club, contributing across an incredible range of roles. From serving as a senior official and working in Race Control, to mentoring others, flag marshaling, and assisting with fire and rescue, their knowledge and flexibility have helped ensure countless events could continue successfully.

They have also been a dedicated member of the club’s executive, playing an important role in our Training Days and creating the Taster Days that introduce new volunteers to motorsport.

Their experience, passion, and commitment to supporting others have contributed greatly to the continued growth of The Motorsport Club.

Congratulations to this year’s recipient of the Bruce Anderson Memorial Trophy, Steve Collier. 😎

The Cheyne McClung Memorial Trophy was presented for the first time this year, in memory of Cheyne, a valued member of our Recovery Team whose contribution to the club is fondly remembered.

This year’s recipient is a long-standing member of our Senior Officials Team, contributing in both CRO and Clerk of the Course roles.

They demonstrate a willingness to learn, drawing on the knowledge and experience of those around them while continuing to develop their own skills.

Throughout the season, they have shown real determination by continuing to have a go, even when things haven’t always gone to plan.

For their dedication, perseverance and continued growth as an official, congratulations to the inaugural recipient of the Cheyne McClung Memorial Trophy, Rachel Schnell.👏
