NZEI Te Riu Roa welcomes the Green Party’s proposed $200m investment to help kaiako upskill in te reo Māori. This funding could help rebuild momentum following the Minister of Education’s damaging cuts to Te Ahu o te Reo Māori, which enabled teachers to learn the language. Investments like this have the potential to help schools build close relationships with mana whenua and foster culturally responsive learning that benefits ākonga.

Government must heed Waitangi Tribunal and partner with Māori on education.

We support the Waitangi Tribunal’s call for the Government to partner with Māori in education, particularly by co-designing a truly indigenous Māori-medium curriculum.
The Tribunal’s findings are clear: the Minister of Education overhauled the national curriculum in clear disregard for Māori voices, opposition from educators, a lack of evidence that it reduces inequities, and in relative secrecy.

We urge the Government to pause, respect Te Tiriti, and genuinely collaborate with Māori and educators to build an education system that serves all ākonga fairly.

Early childhood education needs investment and more qualified teachers – not arbitrary benchmarks and standardised testing.

By prioritising a free-market model where profit is increasingly prioritised over quality, the National Party’s new proposals – including digital screen bans, new skills assessments, and developmental milestones – miss the mark entirely.

Rather than fostering the rich, play-based learning environments tamariki deserve, these measures will only add stress and administrative burdens to already stretched teachers. Let’s focus on what truly matters: resourcing our classrooms and educators properly.

Just a reminder that our local NZEI Mid Canterbury Branch AGM is coming up on Friday 7th of August in the Ashburton Library. We’ll start at 3.45pm. Worksite reps are actively encouraged to attend but all members are also welcome.
