Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche requested the complete renovation and extension of Lawudo Gompa & Retreat Center - thus the Lawudo Gompa Project came into existence. The Vision for the Lawudo Project is the creation of a small Padmasambhava’s “pure land”
At present the old Gompa is being restored and the construction of a new library has begun. There after the retreat-facilities will be improved and ext

ended, and a new building for the resident Sangha is also in the works. Furthermore Lawudo Gompa will be hosting a special sacral art treasure. Ten wonderfully beautiful statues, featuring aspects of Padmasambhava are in the making in one of the most outstanding art workshops in Patan, Kathmandu. With the aim of enabling children from the neighbouring villages to receive a Mahayana Buddhist education, which at present is not possible in the region of Khumbu, the establishment of a school is also planned.

Rinpoche leading the first 100 million mani retreat at Lawudo 49 years ago in the newly built Lawudo Gompa with huge appliqué thangka of the Great Compassionate One behind.

57 years ago on the Tibetan 15th day of Saka Dawa, May 31 1969, the Lawudo cave, fields and possessions of the first Lawudo Lama were officially handed over to Lama Zopa Rinpoche—now formally recognized as the second incarnation.

The locals requested Rinpoche to remain at Lawudo and to lead nyungnes for the locals at Saka Dawa just as the first Lawudo Lama had done.

The practice of Chenrezig and nyungne-ne fasting retreat has continued annually at Lawudo since that time and spread throughout the world.

The first 100 million mani retreat was held at Lawudo in 1977 and the goal of organizing such retreats regularly throughout the world subsequently became one of Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s Vast Visions. https://fpmt.org/fpmt/vast-vision/

Auspicious meetings today with Diu Rinpoche from Pangboche who introduced us to the special blessing of Khumbu as one of the four special hidden valleys (beyul) of Guru Rinpoche with its outer and inner blessings. Ven Ngawang Tengye—the head lama of Namche Lhakang—who guided us around Namche gompa and patiently answered all our questions. And Kopan Ven Sangpo and his family who just arrived in Namche Bazaar.

“May the smile of a new unmistaken incarnation swiftly beam in glory for fortunate disciples!”
