Through heritage-focused walks, Rotary instills civic pride and ensures ancient knowledge passes safely to future generations.

On 19September, 2026 Rotary Club of Mount Everest, Lalitpur members, family and friends visited and performed puja at the Taleju Bhawani Temple Durbar Square.

Taleju Bhaawani is the "Kul deuta" (family/clan deity) of the Malla kings, who ruled the Kathmandu Valley from the 12th to the 18th century. It is one of the most revered and celebrated shrines in Nepal.

The temple is open to the public only once a year during the ninth day of Dashain because she is considered as Goddess Durga. But what makes the temple mysterious is the legend behind it.

According to folklore, the last king of Kantipur (old name of Kathmandu), King Jaya Prakash Malla used to secretly visit the Taleju Temple in Basantapur to meet the Goddess Taleju Bhawani every midnight. They used to play a game of dice every night.

Taleju Bhawani is considered as the goddess who made kings. Legend has it that the great Malla kings established their powerful dynasty because they were granted kingship by goddess Taleju. There are Taleju temples in the three royal palaces of Malla Kings in Basantapur, Patan and Bhaktapur.

After the visit, the Regular Weekly Meeting (RWM #1259) was convened Moon Bistro, Basantapur.

Regular Weekly Meeting RWM #1258

In the meeting today, we had a brief presentation on various topics, by PP Rtn. Badan Lal Nyachhyon covering insights into the cultural aspect of "Matayaa" Festival, Wood and specific tree requirement for building Rato Matchendranath chariot, proposed World Ethics Day program, the recent Rasuwa flood affects and how Rotarians can do need assessment and help.

Highlight of the meeting was talk program by the Guest Speaker Mr. Subham Manandhar on the topic "Rescue Nepal's Stolen Artefacts from Auctioneers".

Mr. Manandhar is a Master's student at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, specializing in Cultural Heritage and Visual Arts, with a focus on Nepal's cultural heritage.

Fulfilling our social responsibility and aiming to assist in the safety and rehabilitation of citizens affected by the recent sudden devastating floods in the Bhote Koshi River, members of the Rotary Club of Mount Everest Rotary Club of Mount Everest, Lalitpur handed over a cheque for Rs. 77,777/- to the Rotary District 3292 office for deposit into the Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund.
