A big part of the population in Nepal is suffered by poverty. It is because above 80 percent people live in rural areas which are quite far from the development. Many groups and classes of people are marginalized and deprived from the realization of human rights and development opportunities to be provided by the state. Among the different marginalized groups of people, the group of people with di
sabilities is one of the most marginalized groups. Still we don’t have agreed data to know the actual number of person with disabilities (PWDs) in Nepal. There is an assumption that above10 % people of the total population live with some kinds of disabilities based on the sample survey undertaken by World Health Organization and different I/NGOs. Out of 30 million populations in Nepal about 2.8 persons are some kinds of disabilities. Profile of the NGO: National Rehabilitation Centre of the Disabled (NRCD) Nepal is a national level legally registered non-governmental organization under the institutional enrollment act 2034 of Nepal. It is in fact, a cross-disability self-help organization of the persons with disabilities (PWDs) which is actually a non-political and service oriented rights based an autonomous social organization of the people, for the people and by the people with disabilities. Established in 1997, it is registered with the Government of Nepal under the District Administration Office, Kathmandu and affiliated with the governing bodies of I/NGOs: Social Welfare Council and National Federation of the Disabled (NFD) Nepal. Furthermore, it is the National Secretariat of Rehabilitation International Nepal (RI Nepal) and Workability Asia which represents the people with disabilities in National and International arena. It is working nationwide for the protection and promotion of the rights and dignity of the people with disabilities. It provides the people with disabilities counseling, medical, social, educational, cultural and economic rehabilitation services based on the need of their disabilities. It aims to ensure the sustainability of employment for the persons with disabilities. NRCD improves opportunities for employment creation, enhances their personal development through capacity building, independent living skills and builds up abilities of the people with disability employees and professionals.
