Press Note

The National Federation of Youth NGO Nepal (NFYN) expresses its deepest condolences and strongest condemnation of the tragic killings of more than 19 young individuals during the recent Gen Z strike. These young voices were peacefully raising their concerns against corruption, injustice, and the failures of governance. Instead of listening to their grievances, the state responded with bullets and violence. This is not only an attack on our youth but also a direct assault on human dignity, human rights, and the democratic values enshrined in the Constitution of Nepal.

Youth are the backbone of our nation. The lives lost were those of young people who dreamed of a better Nepal, a corruption-free society, and a system that values justice and equality. Their sacrifice must not go in vain. NFYN stands firmly with the Gen Z movement and all young people who are striving for accountability and good governance. We demand that the Government of Nepal immediately launch an independent investigation, hold those responsible accountable, and guarantee that such tragedies never repeat in the future.

We call upon civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and the international community to extend their solidarity with the youth of Nepal. Fundamental rights are not favors from the state; they are inherent and guaranteed. Silencing young people through violence will only deepen the mistrust between the state and citizens. What our nation urgently needs is dialogue, justice, and inclusive reforms, not oppression and bloodshed.

The National Federation of Youth NGO Nepal reiterates its unwavering support for youth voices, movements, and their democratic rights. We appeal to every citizen and institution to rise in solidarity, defend fundamental freedoms, and stand with Gen Z. This is a defining moment for our democracy, and together, we must ensure that the sacrifices of our youth bring meaningful change for Nepal’s future.

Our Technical Advisors and Volunteers in Action: Successful Disaster Simulation Drill Conducted in KMC Ward No. 27

From 2021 to 2024, NFYN, in coordination with Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), successfully implemented the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Project in Wards 15, 17, and 27. The project aimed to strengthen the capacity of local communities and government bodies to effectively respond to disasters, with a focus on earthquakes and fires, major hazards in KMC. We trained and mobilized a dedicated group of Technical Advisors and Volunteers as community leaders and took the initiative to establish Disaster Management Committees in each ward. These leaders and committees were equipped with the knowledge and resources needed for effective emergency response. The project also addressed mental health in post-disaster situations through an integrated psychosocial support program. A key component of the initiative was conducting regular disaster simulations and drills to clarify roles and ensure a coordinated, impactful response during emergencies.

On June 18, 2025, our highly capable Technical Advisors, Disaster Management Volunteers, and the Disaster Management Committee of Ward 27 successfully conducted a comprehensive earthquake and fire simulation in the Mahabouddha area. This drill was originally designed under our project in 2024, and the involved personnel were thoroughly trained by NFYN to independently lead such exercises. This time, the team took a significant step forward by coordinating with key disaster response stakeholders, including Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Nepal Army, Nepal Red Cross Society, and the Municipal Police. Their collaborative effort is a strong testament to their dedication and seriousness in strengthening disaster preparedness and building a resilient community.

Our Program Coordinator, Ksh*tij Sharma observed the drill and expressed pride in the project's progress, thanking the Technical Advisors, Volunteers, Disaster Management Committees, and Ward No. 27 for their dedication. This kind of program continues, with Ward 17 and Ward 15. Ward 17 has conducted two simulations and a refresher program, and Ward 15 has completed refresher training. These ongoing efforts, even after the completion of the project, mark a strong step toward building disaster-resilient communities, and NFYN remains committed to supporting this vital work.

Kathmandu Launches Real-Time Air Quality Monitoring Dashboard on International Environment Day !

On the occasion of International Environment Day, June 5, Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) marked a historic milestone by launching a real-time air quality monitoring dashboard, now accessible through its official website. The platform provides citizens with live updates on air quality status, location-wise AQI, and an interactive map using a color-coded system ranging from good (green) to hazardous (red).

This landmark initiative was made possible through the collaboration of KMC, the National Federation of Youth NGOs Nepal (NFYN), and Vital Strategies under the Partnership for Healthy Cities project. With 19 air quality sensors installed across the city, the system empowers evidence-based policymaking and enhances public awareness to protect health and well-being—especially of youth and vulnerable populations.

🌍🌱 Advancing Air Quality in Kathmandu

The National Federation of Youth NGO Nepal (NFYN), in the close collaboration with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Office, we are proud to announce the initiation of air quality sensor installations across the city.

These sensors will play a crucial role in collecting real-time data, enabling the formulation of evidence-based policies and scientific programs to address air quality challenges effectively.

This significant step marks our commitment to ensuring clean air, better health, and a sustainable urban environment for the residents of Kathmandu.

This initiative is a part of the Partnership for Healthy Cities, a prestigious global network dedicated to preventing noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and injuries. Supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Vital Strategies, this project represents the collective ambition of cities worldwide to save lives and enhance public health.

NFYN is honored to facilitate this critical endeavor. We are immensely grateful to the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Office, our staff, stakeholders, donors, media, and community members whose collaboration and dedication are pivotal in making this vision a reality. Together, we are shaping a healthier, more sustainable Kathmandu for generations to come.

Here’s to a future of cleaner air and healthier lives! 🌟
