Tibetan Woolly Flying Squirrel

First record of the Tibetan Woolly Flying Squirrel, Eupetaurus tibetensis from Kangchenjunga Conservation Area in northeastern Nepal.

Captured by camera traps during a Snow Leopard survey, this record fills a significant biogeographic gap in the known distribution of the genus Eupetaurus, suggesting a continuous Himalayan distribution.

Eagle talons are among the most precisely engineered gripping weapons in the entire animal kingdom. The Harpy Eagle carries rear talons reaching 13 centimeters long, larger than grizzly bear claws, with a grip force exceeding 530 newtons sufficient to crush a monkey spine instantly. The Bald Eagle has long curved talons specifically shaped for snatching fish from water surfaces at full flight speed without slowing down. The Osprey carries uniquely reversible outer toes and spiny toe pads that allow it to carry slippery fish headfirst in perfect aerodynamic alignment during flight. The Martial Eagle of Africa can strike with enough force to knock a human adult off their feet. Same bird family. Four weapons shaped by four completely different prey. 🦅

Himalayan Griffon
April 1, 2026, Lalitpur

The recent sighting of Himalayan Griffons at a roosting site in Kathmandu Valley may indicate a potential return of vultures following the catastrophic collapse in numbers observed in the 1990s. This observation offers a positive sign for conservationists, suggesting that ongoing conservation efforts, reduced use of harmful veterinary drugs, and improved habitat conditions may be contributing to gradual population recovery. Continued monitoring and systematic surveys, however, are essential to determine whether this represents a temporary occurrence or the early signs of long-term recolonization of the valley.
