The Date a Health Worker Writes Should Be the Date the System Stores

The challenge

A health worker records a visit in a register using a BS date, then re-enters it on a screen that only understands Gregorian dates. Every entry becomes a mental conversion and conversion at the point of data entry is where errors quietly enter a health record.

Our contribution

Supporting the GIZ digitalization team and IHIMS, we carried the Nepali calendar through the whole chain rather than patching one screen: the DHIS2 Capture app, the Android app with offline support, and a custom aggregate report app working on Nepali months, years and fiscal year.

Impact

Health workers record in the calendar they actually use. Reports line up with the Nepali fiscal year. The code sits in public repositories owned by the ministry.

Key lesson

Half-localised software is worse than none. A date shown two ways teaches users not to trust the screen.

Explore how you can now analyze climate and health data together in DHIS2 with a new dashboard for climate & malaria, climate data sets, and the latest version of the DHIS2 Climate app. These tools enable countries to identify and examine the links between climate change and health risks like malaria outbreaks, to create more targeted and effective interventions.
