BNMT Nepal participated in the National Coordination Meeting on Leprosy Programme Strategic Priorities and Implementation, organized by Epidemiology and Disease Control Division Leprosy Control and Disability Management Section on 29–30 September 2026 at the National Health Training Center, Teku. Colleague Dr Manoj Kumar Sah represented BNMT in the meeting and shared about our work on Leprosy.

The meeting brought together partners to review progress and plans, share lessons and challenges, and strengthen collaboration. Discussions also focused on the Leprosy Case-Based Management System, Leprosy Case Management Guidelines, National Leprosy Strategic Plan 2026–2030, and leprosy hotspot mapping, with stakeholder feedback to support their finalisation.

We remain committed to strengthening Nepal’s coordinated response to leprosy.

A review and planning meeting for the ACCELERATE Project was held at Lalgadh Leprosy Hospital, Dhanusha, Madhesh Province, bringing together the project team to review progress and plan next steps.

So far, 895 skin punch biopsy samples from people with leprosy have been sent to our partner Center for Molecular Dynamics - Nepal (CMDN) for whole-genome sequencing, supporting research to better understand Mycobacterium leprae.

The Himalayan Breath of HOPE project has started TB preventive treatment activities in Morang, in collaboration with NATA Morang.

Through household contact tracing and screening, the project is helping identify family members who may have TB infection without symptoms and connect those who are eligible with 3HP TB preventive treatment.

By preventing latent TB infection from developing into TB disease, the project is working to protect families and communities and move closer to ending TB. 💙

The TB SHIELD project has entered Phase II, expanding from three to five air-sampling sites across Nepal.

Building on work at NATA Morang, GENETUP Kathmandu and TB Nepal Nepalgunj, the project has now expanded to Koshi Hospital in Koshi Province and Bheri Hospital in Lumbini Province.

Following the MOU, coordination meetings and orientation for laboratory teams, air sampling has begun at both hospitals, with samplers running twice a week and samples being couriered to NATA GENETUP Kathmandu for culture testing.

This expansion strengthens TB SHIELD’s air-sampling activities across Nepal.

A comprehensive field visit brought together BNMT team members, project partners and technical experts to review ongoing work and strengthen collaboration across several projects, including ACCELERATE, TB SHIELD and new project, BUMP TB.

The team met with the TB Nepal team to learn about the progress of the TB SHIELD project and visit the DR TB Hostel. At Bheri Hospital, discussions with the hospital management and team focused on BUMP TB and TB SHIELD. The visit to Shining Hospital/INF provided an opportunity to review project progress and plan further activities.

At the BNMT Province Office, Banke, the team reviewed updates from different projects being implemented across the province.

As part of the engagement, Dr Sarah Dunstan and Alison visited the BNMT Kathmandu office earlier, where they shared an overview of the BUMP TB project with the team. The session provided an opportunity for colleagues to learn more about the project, and its implementation in Nepal.

Overall,the engagements provided valuable opportunities to connect with teams working on the ground, understand project implementation more closely and exchange experiences.

BNMT conducted a three-day Primary Trauma Care (PTC) and Basic Life Support (BLS) training under the Trauma Hub Project in Nepal at Lalgadh Leprosy Hospital Training Hall, Dhanusha, Madhesh Province.
The practical, competency-based training focused on ABCDE trauma assessment, CPR/BLS, airway management, bleeding control, immobilization, stabilization, triage, and timely referral.
The training strengthened participants’ knowledge, practical skills, confidence, and readiness to provide timely and quality emergency and primary trauma care.
The training was attended by 20 health workers including Medical Officers, Health Assistants, Staff Nurses, and Paramedics, from Chandranigahpur Hospital and Binayi Tribeni Basic Hospital.
BNMT extends sincere appreciation to all facilitators, government representatives, hospitals, local governments, and participants for their valuable contribution to the successful completion of the training.
