The Shey Festival of Karnali, also known as the Shey Mela, is a rare religious and cultural festival held at Shey Gompa in Upper Dolpo, Dolpa District, Karnali Province, Nepal. The festival is closely connected with the sacred Crystal Mountain (Shelri Dugdra) and is traditionally celebrated once every 12 years during the Year of the Dragon in the Tibetan calendar. The most recent major festival was held in 2024, following the previous one in 2012, and the next is expected in 2036. The festival brings together local people, Buddhist monks, pilgrims and visitors from different places for religious ceremonies, prayers and cultural activities. One of the main practices is Kora, the traditional circumambulation of the sacred Crystal Mountain, which devotees undertake as an act of religious devotion. Shey Gompa itself is an important Buddhist centre in Upper Dolpo, and local traditions connect the area with the Buddhist master Druptop Shinge Yeshe. During the festival period, visitors can experience Buddhist rituals, traditional dances, music, prayers, local clothing, archery, horse-related activities and other cultural gatherings. The festival is particularly significant because it takes place in the remote high-altitude environment of Upper Dolpo, where communities have maintained strong Tibetan-influenced cultural and religious traditions. Shey lies at roughly 4,200 metres above sea level and is within the Shey-Phoksundo National Park, an area known for its dramatic Himalayan landscape, Phoksundo Lake, high mountain passes and wildlife such as blue sheep and snow leopard. Reaching Shey is itself a demanding trekking journey, generally involving travel through Nepalgunj and Juphal/Dunai followed by several days of trekking, depending on the route. Because of the altitude, remoteness, limited accommodation and difficult transportation, visitors need proper acclimatisation, equipment, guides and emergency planning. The Shey Festival is therefore more than a conventional tourism event; it is a religious pilgrimage and community gathering deeply connected with the landscape and traditions of Upper Dolpo. For travellers, the combination of Crystal Mountain, Shey Gompa, Dolpo culture, high-altitude trekking and a festival that occurs only once every 12 years makes it a particularly rare experience in Nepal.

Situation Update | Manaslu Trekking Route

The Manaslu trekking route in Gorkha has resumed operations following repair and maintenance of sections of the trail and bridge infrastructure affected by recent flooding.

According to the District Administration Office, Gorkha, the damaged structures along the route connecting Chumnubri Rural Municipality–4, Namrung, have been restored to a condition suitable for trekking. The earlier restriction on trekking in the affected section has therefore been lifted.

Travellers planning to trek in the Manaslu region are advised to remain updated on local conditions and follow necessary safety precautions while travelling.
Manaslu is accessible. Nepal continues to welcome travellers.
