Initiation of EDC Nepal PAHUCH Project: TOT on Advocating for Dignified Menstruation
Under the initiation of the EDC Nepal PAHUCH Project, funded by DCA Nepal, a Training of Trainers (TOT) on Advocating for Dignified Menstruation was successfully conducted from 18 to 21 December in Doti District.
The training targeted women leaders, champions, male activists, and senior citizens from the project coverage areas. A total of 34 participants took part in the training.
The main trainers of the event were Dr. Radha Paudel, a renowned Dignified Menstruation campaigner, and Mr. Govinda Khadka, Chief Editor of CIN and a social campaigner.
During the training, Dr. Radha Paudel emphasized the importance of using the term “Dignified Menstruation” instead of “Chhaupadi.” She highlighted that menstruation is not a problem limited to Sudurpaschim Province, but a universal issue. She explained that there are 74 different terms used for menstruation across Nepal, reflecting deep-rooted stigma and misconceptions.
Dr. Paudel stressed that menstruation is not a curse but a natural blessing, as it enables women to give birth. She strongly stated that discriminatory practices related to menstruation are a violation of human rights from a gender perspective.
After the completion of the training, participants developed action plans to carry out advocacy activities on dignified menstruation within their respective communities.
The training was formally welcomed by Mr. Mahesh Trikhatri, Executive Director of EDC Nepal. The campaign strengthened the confidence and knowledge of participants and helped to build eight new champions, including women activists from Sikhar area.
Ms. Asha BK, one of the women activists, shared that the training was empowering and would help them advocate for dignified menstruation practices in their communities.
