Got some fundamental move and now taking part in one of the most powerful conferences organised by the Universitetet i Oslo (UiO) about Trauma, Memory and Counter-Culture.

An impressive line-up of speakers, a concentration of themes that we have been working closely these years and a wonderful opportunity to be part of a thoughtful discussion about the traumatic experience of previous and future generations and countercultural initiatives working with this issue.

Zhanna Guzenko chairs one of the sessions on the second day, but we encourage to join the two days of the conference.

The conference explores borders and border transgressions in the context of trauma, memory, and counter-culture and aims to highlight the specific relevance of Border Studies for better understanding literature, arts, and everyday culture in repressive, transformative and (post-)war societies.

Welcome to Nomadic Base – an existential hub where naive pieces of the past, the merciless and frightening features of the present, and the metal ringing uncertainty of future all come together.

It is a group exhibition that we have curated in the beginning of this year at Barents Spektakel 2023. There are different voices of artists, who left their countries and continue to reflect about their identity, mental and real borders, surveillance and escalating madness during continuing geopolitical mess.

Nomadic Base is flashing in different world locations and uniting scattered around communities of artists and curators who are questioning their identity, environmental issues and shaking social constructs under the war conflicts and domination of transnational corporations.

We are thankful to Pikene på Broen and Terminal B to be the host and for giving a floor to experiment and presenting our curatorial nomadic concept. The next stop is somewhere in the Northern latitudes.

OPEN CALL 🔔

The next edition of Field Recording Lab is in a get-rolling collaboration with Barents Spektakel 2023. This time it is a five-day test lab of the synesthetic research of the light environment of Kirkenes, a border town beyond the Arctic Circle. By the help of custom-made light-sensitive microphones the laboratory participants will have an opportunity to listen the light landscapes of the northern town and create a sound piece to be premiered at Barents Spektakel 2023.

Expert of the Lab is Boris Shershenkov experimental sound artist, engineer and musical instrument inventor. His main focus is an investigation of the relationship between humans and technology combining modern techniques with media archaeological research.

Just opened the first station in the Nomadic Base chain – in Helsinki.

We were glad to welcome and to be welcomed by the Finnish and international community. Paradoxically the former TV and radio center was taken over for a few days for transmitting most safe and inspiring vibes from Baltic Circle x Inversia. Incredible auditorium which is ideal for audiovisual performances, reminding of a boardroom inside the universes of Star Trek or Space Precinct. Another space with a luminous cube in the center from which everyone has been directly teleported to the dance floor. Our big gratitudes to the warmhearted Baltic Circle team who made it happen!

It was an inspiring launch of nomadic mode of Inversia, now we continue to prepare for the next event in February 2023 in Norway.

We are releasing a short documentary from one of our laboratories which took place in February this year. This time the participants explored the electric light environment, captured the city of Murmansk awaking from the Polar night and finalised their researches into the cartographical play at Scientific library.

Gradually we are shaking off the stupor and step by step returning to own activity. Here is a long-awaited video about the events of last year hybrid art residence that we made together with our Norwegian colleagues Pikene på Broen

Sweetness of Living is a research project in the laboratory format, which took place simultaneously in the border area of Norwegian Kirkenes and Russian Murmansk. The art residency resulted in joint and individual projects of artists. Some of them were presented at the Inversia festival, some are still in production.

This year our annual Fridaymilk residency recruitment is on hold. We decided to focus on the events of the next year and build the tracks of our current activities in the new reality. Therefore, together with you, we want to rewind to a year ago, when the closed borders due to COVID were the dominant form of isolation.

In spite of the fragile global cooperation and diverse mindsets we save our warm relations over the borders and continue building cultural networks and yet hope to see our friends soon.

This weekend our team has moved further north to Nikel. On Saturday we are preparing for the broadcasting cross-border talk between Nikel and Kirkenes. At Barents Spektakel 2022 we are presenting Fjernsynsbro: New era, a project of our Norwegian friend and partner – filmmaker and producer Carl Christian Lein Størmer and Murmansk-based filmmaker and artist 1999Q.

We are rethinking and reconstructing the event, which roots back in 1988 when the first ever broadcast between norwegian Tromsø and soviet Murmansk happened, the historical period when the borders were closed and neighbours could see each other only via tv-streams. Now after two years of pandemic and habited to online meetings the borders are yet closed but the necessity to talk with neighbours is still essential.
