This August, we are delighted to welcome Olive Gallagher from Aotearoa, New Zealand, as the first artist to join the evolving artistic research programme at Eden Baths.
platter is a musician and multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores relationships between ecology, listening and place, drawing together sound, visual art and research. During her residency at Eden Baths, she will investigate ideas around ecological notation, exploring how environmental observations, sound and material processes might be translated into visual forms. With a particular interest in water as both material and a medium of translation, she explores how listening can become a way of responding to and collaborating with landscape.

Olive also carries Irish ancestry, opening another beautiful layer of connection to the North Atlantic and its interconnected sea cultures. From Aotearoa to Ireland and the Norwegian coast, we are interested in how oceanic histories, ancestral memory, migration and relationships with the sea might surface through her encounter with Averøy and its coastal landscape.

Alongside her artistic research, Olive will join us in the seasonal rhythms of Eden Baths, contributing to the care of the garden and living landscape. We see these moments of cultivation, care and exchange as an integral part of our artistic research, where creative practice grows alongside relationships with land, water and community.

We are especially drawn to the attentiveness that runs through Olive’s work. Her reflections on gardens as places of observation, care and ongoing conversation with the more-than-human world resonate deeply with the ethos of Eden Baths. We look forward to seeing how the forests, coastline, gardens, waters and changing weather of Averøy enter into dialogue with her practice over the coming weeks.

Our forest glamping tents & pavilion are nestled between the Atlantic Ocean, moss-covered forests, wild gardens, and ancient stone walls on the island of Averøy, Norway. Each one is a simple, warm sanctuary—designed for slowing down, listening, creating, and resting in rhythm with the more-than-human world.

Light the wood stove on cooler evenings, wake to birdsong and the scent of the sea, share meals from the garden, wander to the shoreline for a morning dip, or simply watch the changing light move across the stunning views & landscape.

Whether you come for a retreat, a group artistic research gathering, a workshop, a seasonal immersion, or a few quiet days in nature, they offer a space to reconnect—with yourself, with others, and with the living ecologies that surround us.

Guests have access to shared outdoor kitchens, ecological showers and compost toilets, fire circles, gardens, woodland paths, and coastline hikes. Seasonal bathing experiences, botanical rituals, and sauna gatherings invite a deeper encounter with the waters and the land.

At Eden Baths, we believe that how we dwell, bathe, eat, walk, and gather can become deep practices of regeneration.

“Echoes of Resistance: Knowledge and Stories of the Land and Waters” (The Pyrenees–Norway) is an artistic research project supported by NTNU’s Programme for Artistic Research (Kunstnerisk utviklingsarbeid), led by Polina Golovátina-Mora , with artists Bridget Sheridan and Leticia Balzi.

Hosted at Eden Baths as part of the Bathing & Beyond research platform, with lectures and workshops led by María Martínez Pisón (Mary Bramble ( Above All Brambles) and Nazare Soares , we explored how bathing, flower baths, oral traditions, fairies, water beings, and more-than-human cosmologies can inform contemporary ecological thought and artistic practice.

We asked what forms of expanded cognition become possible when we engage with the invisible—from microbial life and more-than-human ecologies to the stories and myths that have long shaped our relationship with water. We also reflected on the embodied knowledge held within our inner waters and the everyday gestures of carrying water, washing clothes, spinning wool, and tending the domestic-sacred sphere—practices historically intertwined with springs, rivers, memory, and the spirits of water. In a time of ecological fragmentation, recovering these ways of knowing may be as important as preserving biodiversity itself.

A central part of the gathering unfolded in our Wild Sauna, where soft steam, plants, earth, stone, flower baths, and the waters invited deep listening. These living cosmologies continued to unfold through dreams and found expression in and through the body, opening space to receive knowledge from the land, the waters, and the more-than-human world.

Keeping alive ways of relating with water, plants, place, and one another that our world urgently needs.

We are deeply grateful to share that Bathing & Beyond at Eden Baths has received support through «Regionale kulturfond: kunst og kulturutvikling» from Møre og Romsdal fylkeskommune for the development phase of our emerging art residency model on the Atlantic coast of Averøy.

Bathing & Beyond positions contemporary art and aquatic somatic practices as contributors to ecological stewardship and the cultural continuity of Norway’s coastal environments.

The residency approaches the bath not as a space of leisure, but as a site of multispecies encounter and living coastal heritage.

Through artistic research, gatherings, workshops, and translocal collaborations, the project explores vernacular architectures as spaces where care for the sea and body, labor, ecology, memory, and landscape intersect.

Over the coming year, Eden Baths will welcome artists, researchers, and practitioners from different international and local coastal territories to engage with bathing culture, water ecologies, sustainable craft traditions, and Atlantic heritage.
