🇵🇹 Portugal launches public consultation on bullfighting as cultural heritage

The Portuguese government has launched a public consultation on the proposed inclusion of Corrida de Toiros em Portugal (bullfighting in Portugal) in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The consultation runs until 13 November. Património Cultural, I.P. will then have 120 days to make a decision.

🐂 CAS International has submitted a letter to Património Cultural, I.P. expressing our concerns about the proposed recognition of bullfighting as cultural heritage.

We have also sent a letter on behalf of the Red Internacional Anti-Tauromaquia/International Anti-Bullfighting Network, representing more than 60 organisations from 12 countries.

Animal suffering is an inherent part of bullfighting. Animals are sentient beings and deserve legal protection. Cultural traditions can evolve — and protecting cultural heritage should not mean protecting animal suffering.

✨ Het is vandaag Dierendag! 🐃🐴🐶

🎉 51,771 signatures against EU agricultural subsidies for bullfighting! 🎉

Yesterday, together with World Animal Protection Denmark, we handed over 51,771 signatures to MEP Niels Fuglsang at the European Parliament in Brussels 🐂🇪🇺

Our petition calls for an end to EU agricultural subsidies being used to breed bulls for bullfighting and cruel bull-running festivals.

During the handover, Niels Fuglsang symbolically cut the link between subsidies and bullfighting and tore up banknotes featuring images of bullfighting and bull festivals

A huge THANK YOU to every single person who signed, shared and supported our campaign! ❤️ Your voices came together from 93 countries, including all 27 EU Member States.

And this is just the beginning. As the EU works on the Common Agricultural Policy for the period after 2027, we will keep pushing for European taxpayers’ money to support sustainable farming. Not animal suffering for entertainment.

🥳 51,771 signatures from 93 countries, and supported by more 50 organizations worldwide.

This is one clear message: EU subsidies should not fund bullfighting.

Elk jaar sterven duizenden stieren in arena’s in Europa.
