A meaningful milestone for the Lion Heart Medical Centre: the official opening of our 𝐍𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭. This is a dedicated space providing specialised care for newborn babies who need extra medical attention during their first days of life. Hospital leadership described the unit as “an investment in life, hope, and the future of our community.”

The first 28 days of life are the most fragile time for a child. When a baby is born prematurely, with low birth weight, breathing difficulties, an infection, or other complications, specialised care is required. Until now, such care was limited or required transfer to distant facilities. The launch of our Neonatal Unit brings this critical care closer to home.

In the Neonatal Care Unit, our clinicians, midwives and nurses work together to support vulnerable newborns through close observation, heightened infection prevention measurements, temperature regulation, feeding support, oxygen support, and emergency care. It is equipped with an incubator, a resuscitation table, oxygen concentrators, infusion pumps, and phototherapy lights (blue lights for babies with newborn jaundice).

This project would not have been possible without the support of the Ministry of Health and of many individual donors. Our gratitude goes out to all who took part in the successful Christmas Crowdfunding campaign ‘Start Them Right!’ in December 2023, the starting point of this project.

𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐟 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬
The new staff quarters have been opened and are already fully occupied! There are 14 new apartments, each with their own living room, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, veranda, and store. These apartments right next to the hospital provide comfortable accommodation for our hard working staff.

The opening was timely, as the rental contract of the riverside compound could not be extended. All employees and students staying at this compound could find a suitable place. For the expatriates, a small fenced compound was created to provide extra safety and privacy. We are sad to leave the beautiful riverside compound, but hope the new accommodation will prove to be a better alternative as the grounds and buildings are fully owned by LHMC.

Fifty hospital beds received a completely new mattress cover, improving patient comfort and hygiene. All patients receive freshly washed bed linnen, but some of our mattress covers were becoming worn out. The renewal of all these mattresses was possible because of a beautiful donation!

Meet Saidu, one of our dedicated nurses in the Female Ward, providing essential wound care to a patient who sustained injuries and a fracture following an accident.

His careful attention, and commitment to infection prevention and patient comfort demonstrate the important role nurses play in the recovery journey 💙 Every wound dressing is more than a procedure, it is a step toward healing.

Recently, all medical staff received a two-day refresher ETAT training. In this WHO training in “Emergency Triage Assessment And Treatment” staff learn how to quickly recognise and treat critically ill children.

The training started with a pre-test, followed by different theoretical and practical sessions. Doctors and pediatric officers shared their knowledge and experiences regarding emergency situations, like a blocked airway. The training climaxed with an examination and the awarding of certificates!

📸 In picture: 1) singing & dancing; 2) health advice for pregnancy; 3) measuring blood pressure as part of health check-up; 4) first consultation and supply of vitamins and basic medication; 5) ultrasound scan. Antenatal care at LHMC also includes laboratory tests and consultation by a clinician.
