Pieter Frans Christiaan Koch (1901-1991), better known as Pyke Koch, stands alone in the history of 20th century art. Koch was, and still is, an artist’s artist, having taught himself the intricacies of his craft and taken inspiration from a wide span of sources, from masters of the Italian Renaissance to German cinema to his surroundings in Utrecht. Although he is typically grouped with other ar

tists who painted in the style of Magical Realism, Koch was the only one who fully embraced the term, defining it as “based on the representation of what is possible, but not probable.” Koch was active as a painter from the late 1920s until 1980, completing an oeuvre of just over 200 works. Founded in 2012, the Pyke Koch Foundation is dedicated to furthering research and shedding light on the life and work of the artist. The Foundation is currently collaborating with the RKD (Netherlands Institute for Art History) to make a complete online catalogue of Koch’s oeuvre. The Pyke Koch Foundation page is dedicated to providing its followers with updates on relevant events and news articles, and, of course, to the enjoyment of the world of Pyke Koch.
