The European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) is the membership organisation for the European zoo and aquarium community. 400+ Members in 48 countries across Europe and the Middle East are work collaboratively on conservation, research and education for the protection of nature and its most iconic and vulnerable species. EAZA membership is open to all zoos and aquaria across Europe that com

ply with EAZA's standards. Member zoos and aquariums and other associate members can be found in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, the United States and the United Kingdom. The mission of the association is to promote cooperation for furthering regional collection planning and wildlife conservation, mainly through coordinated breeding programmes of wild animals such as the EAZA Ex situ Programme (EEP). 🌍Conservation | 𝗡𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗘𝗔𝗭𝗔 𝘇𝗼𝗼𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲! 🐌

Conservationists, including teams from Chester Zoo and Zoo de Beauval, have just reintroduced hundreds of tiny snails to a rocky Atlantic island, following a breeding programme that pulled four species* back from the brink of extinction.

🚨When the last wild population was reduced to a handful, the Madeira government asked both zoos to step in and the surviving snails were carefully transported into their care for breeding.

Following close coordination, more than 300 𝘎𝘦𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘳𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘶𝘭𝘢 and 270 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢 𝘭𝘺𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 have recently been released back onto the Desertas islands, part of the Madeiran archipelago, helping to restore habitat and support biodiversity. 🌱🐌

🤝This reintroduction is rooted in years of careful ex situ breeding and collaboration between zoos, conservation specialists and governmental authorities.

This Sunday (9 August) we're celebrating the amazing creatures of Indonesia - especially the , , , and ! All four of these species can only be found in Indonesia, and sadly are also under threat of extinction.

🤝 Action Indonesia is an international collaboration of more than 50 organisations* working together to protect these species!

Through Global Species Management Plans 📝 using the One Plan Approach, they combine the skills and resources of experts within and beyond the global zoo community to achieve stable and secure populations.

🔬Research | 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘇𝗼𝗼𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝟲𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼! 🐘

That's what was found in the new study led by ZSL, together with Species360, the Syddansk Universitet – University of Southern Denmark, and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology.

Using over six decades of data from the Species360 Zoological Information Management System, 🐘🔍researchers found that zoo elephant survival now matches or exceeds that of the wild and semi-wild populations included in the study.

Results showed that female zoo elephants now live up to 21% longer, and males up to 44% longer, than they did 60 years ago. 🙌

𝗠𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘇𝗼𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆!🐾 Associations like EAZA, BIAZA and The Association of Zoos and Aquariums in North America have developed and continue to update best practice guidelines📘to improve elephant care in zoos.

📢 Advocacy | 𝗘𝗔𝗭𝗔 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟯𝟰𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗦 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴

Earlier this month, Simon Bruslund, EAZA Conservation Committee Chair, and Danny de Man, EAZA Deputy Director, represented EAZA at the 34th meeting of the CITES Animals Committee in Geneva (Switzerland), joining over 400 delegates ahead of CoP2028. 🤝

Combatting unsustainable and illegal wildlife trade is a priority for EAZA, and these meetings are a great opportunity to bring scientific expertise🔬, husbandry knowledge🐾and conservation experience 🌎 from the zoo and aquarium community.
