Hoi Amsterdam! 👋

Celebrating a 7-yr friend-iversary with the brilliant by supporting her keynote talk at Mindvalley University: Making Changes that Last (Thurs 7th, 11am on the Insights Stage). 🙌

Shahroo’s first book, The Kindness Method, changed my life, and was a SHC BOTM in August 2018 (BOTM #11… we’re now on #60!).

Then we fell in love over a mutual adoration of self-help, teaching self-compassion as a life skill… and Norwich city.

I am VERY excited to be here celebrating Shahroo aswell as all things personal development and self-discovery with the .events team. (It’s a Disneyland for self-help fans!).

Also managed to see .mental.fitness - another one of our featured authors - discussing visualisation and mental fitness on stage.

Feeling very inspired. And we’re only on Day #1!

Question of the day: Who is Your 2.0?

Hello episode FOUR of series two of The Bibliotherapists, a podcast all about the healing power of words that’s hosted on - and celebrates the people of - Substack.

For the next month my co-host and I will be sharing weekly conversations with writers and creatives whose work we love, asking them to share their VIBs (very important books) and how they use words to heal themselves, and others.

🎧 EPISODE 4: DONNA LANCASTER

For our next episode we’re joined by Donna Lancaster a life transitions coach, spiritual mentor and elder-in-training.

Donna, 58, has worked in the therapeutic space for more than 30 years, starting her career as a social worker. She was formerly the head of teaching at the Hoffman Institute UK, and co-created the renowned The Bridge Retreat, a six-day residential personal development experience.

(Our community will be watching Love(d), the documentary made about The Bridge, together on Monday 18th August so join us for that if you can).

This episode is a balm for anyone navigating loss, longing or big life transitions.

🎟️ TONIGHT! We have a double healing whammy for online Shelfies.

6pm: I’ll be going Live on Substack with author to celebrate the launch of her latest book, Let Go (all welcome to that, you just need to be a free SHC subscriber).

7pm: It’s our monthly book club meet for members when we’ll be discussing insights and learnings so far from BOTM, How We Heal by

❤️‍🩹

A little bit about Natalie’s book (published by The Pound Project):

“It’s essentially what I learned about letting go and surrendering from what feels like a decade-long road of trials and is split into two parts: Family and Friction. Subjects I delve into include estrangement, grief, burnout, breaking up with my mother, chasing success, and my hysterectomy that led to a cancer diagnosis.”

Nat, author and host of the brilliant Baggage Reclaim podcast, will be discussing letting go as a path to healing, about family and friction, and we’ll learn all about The Pound Project and how they are shaking up the publishing world.

Daisy, 40, also hosts the chart-topping podcast, You’re Booked, interviewing legendary writers from all over the world AND supports new writers via her Substack publication, The Creative Confidence Clinic.

In other words, she’s a total and utter word nerd.

And a total delight to interview.

Our latest podcast guest, Sam Baker, is a recovering magazine editor now using her writing and broadcasting skills to give voice to midlife women through her chart-topping podcast, online community and book of the same name, The Shift.

Sam writes about the stuff that 40+ women are all talking about, or at least *want* to be talking about (her latest post is all about midlife libido and atrophy).

And this book is THE guide to navigating midlife, and beyond.

Also it’s so good it has two subtitles, depending on when you picked up your copy:
1. (OG) How I (lost and) found myself after 40
2. (New) Join the menopause revolution
Both of which I’m sure lots of us here can relate to.

In our podcast Sam, a professional bookworm, shares her epic reading lists as well as the books that have shaped her life to date.

She also gets candid about her previous life in media, and how she has achieved more peace and better mental health in midlife.

(And you can swipe left for her Bibliotherapists book stack)

• Nights at The Circus by Angela Carter
• How to End a Story by Helen Garner
• Slow Horses by Mick Herron
• The Dry Season by Melissa Febos
• How to Lose Your Mother by Molly Jong-Fast
• All Fours by Miranda July
• Midnight and Blue by Ian Rankin

🎧 New episode every Friday.

📣 London! Want to come and talk about how we (you) heal over Virgin palomas this week? ❤️‍🩹

As we prepare to relaunch our global local hosting programme at the end of summer I’m planning a series of IRL meetups in Shelf Help’s OG town, starting this week - Thurs July 24th.

Powered by the delicious AF drinks brand I’ll be hosting a monthly event at the v chic - and v central - Brityard venue.

This is a chance to meet like-minded self-help lovers in a beautiful space and talk about the things that matter.

Open to SHC members and friends. Limited ticket numbers left. All the info in Stories/at Shelfhelp.club.

(Reading the BOTM, How We Heal, optional but encouraged).

🎧 It’s time for the second episode of series two of The Bibliotherapists, a podcast all about the healing power of words that’s hosted on - and celebrates the people of - Substack.

For July & August my co-host and I will be sharing weekly conversations with writers and creatives whose work we love, asking them to share their VIBs (very important books) and how they use words to heal themselves, and others.

🎧 EPISODE 2: SAM BAKER

For this episode we are joined by sam baker, a journalist, broadcaster, author, midlife mentor and professional bookworm.

Having spent decades in magazine land, today Sam, 59, is known for ‘endlessly banging the drum for women in midlife and beyond’ as the creator of the podcast and substack, The Shift with Sam Baker.

In this conversation she talks to us about menopause, burnout and the transformational powerful of midlife, sharing her journey from glossy magazine editor to fierce advocate for women over 40.

She says: “Midlife is not a crisis. It’s a chance to ask: who am I now?”
