For us at Volunteers with , every moment spent at Raktamala has always been truly beautiful. The children welcomed us with bright smiles, endless affection, and little moments we will cherish forever. ❤️
But alongside all these beautiful memories, there’s a hard truth we can’t ignore: the school has not been safe for 10 years, ever since the 2015 deadly earthquake caused severe damage to the buildings. Despite the urgent need, the school hasn’t received the support required to rebuild safely. These kids and their teachers deserve a space where they can learn, play, and grow without fear. They deserve a safe school.
This fundraiser is for THEM: for the children in these photos, the teachers guiding them, and every little one who will walk through these doors in the years ahead. Every contribution helps give them a safe place to learn, dream, and just be kids. 🌟

📚 When the walls cracked and gave away, the community stood tall.
Despite the damage caused by the 2015 earthquake, the school in Raktamala never closed its doors. Against all odds, it remained open, so children could keep learning, dreaming, and hoping. ✨
For years, families, teachers, and students have shown up with determination, walking long distances 🚶🏽♀️🚶🏽, adapting to broken walls and unstable roofs. But they can’t rebuild the school on determination alone.
We’re raising funds 💛 to restore this school — left without support and funding. Many children walk 2 to 3 hours every day just to attend this English-medium school 🏫 because it’s the only one around.

Imagine a school where walls are cracked, roofs are unstable, walls are falling apart, and every day, children sit in rooms that could collapse at any moment. This is the heartbreaking reality for the students of Raktamala Basic School, a school situated in the rural area of Nepal in the Everest Region. Severely damaged by the 2015 earthquake, the school buildings were never rebuilt. Despite the dangers, these children continue to study in unsafe conditions because they have no other choice.
A team of three volunteers from Portugal, Italy, and Nepal who worked in this school for the past five months in the Child protection project have set up a fundraiser in collaboration with and Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN) to raise funds to restore and reconstruct their school, providing them with a safe and secure learning environment.
Their goal is to ensure every child, particularly in rural areas, has access to quality education and can learn without fear.

Friends of Volunteers Initiative Nepal (FoVIN), Netherlands is an SDO - a Social Development Organization which was founded in March 2011 by Ann Wilson and Juna Shrestha. FoVIN strives to empower marginalized communities, with a focus on women and children, through enhanced educational programs and community training to promote equality, economic well-being and basic human rights.
Poverty is a complex phenomenon; its causes and symptoms are complex and there is no one-fits-all solution. Education alone isn't enough, healthcare alone will create positive lasting change nor will the sole support of women's and children's programs. Our mission is to empower marginalized communities by co-creating healthy, self-sustainable communities where people have access to adequate sanitation, health care, education and economic opportunity. We focus on women and children through enhanced educational programs and community training to promote equality, economic well-being and basic human rights.
In rural communities, the suffering caused by poverty can be overwhelming since the needs for basic amenities surpass the local resources. We believe that the only way to create sustainable and lasting change is to involve and empower the local community. Firstly, together we define the priorities of the different areas that need attention. Subsequently, we work hand-in-hand with the community leaders to develop and implement effective solutions to the problems that exist in their villages, and we actively encourage people to volunteer within their communities, aiming to unite all sectors of society in working together to set up and run local projects. Lastly, after a period of 5-7 years we remove our active presence as the community is ready to continue the activities on their own. This is the essence of sustainability!
We work together with our partner is Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN) a Nepal based NGO established in 2007. Our community-based pilot project is located in Jitpur, a rural community surrounded by woods, hills and fields. It lies 11 kilometres from the capital on the outskirts of the Kathmandu Valley near the beautiful Nagarjuna forest reserve. There are also projects located elsewhere in the region and VIN is currently working to expand its scope to a second community-based site, Okhaldhunga, in the north east part of Nepal.
All donations go directly to the projects run by VIN.
