Syphilis is on the rise and too many cases remain unseen.
On Friday, AHF Ukraine brought together healthcare professionals, community leaders, advocates and media in Kyiv for a press conference focused on one of the growing public health challenges: the rise of syphilis and the gaps in testing and diagnosis.
How many people in Ukraine actually have syphilis? The honest answer is: we don’t know. Official statistics only capture the cases that are diagnosed and reported, while many infections remain undetected.
Experts at the conference highlighted how syphilis is increasingly being discovered incidentally - during pregnancy, before surgery or while people are seeking care for an unrelated health issue. Stigma, fear and shame can also prevent people from getting tested.
The topic attracted significant attention from the Ukrainian media, with around 15 media publications covering the issue and the key messages from the press conference. This strong media interest shows how important it is to keep syphilis visible on the public health agenda.
The Kyiv press conference is part of AHF’s global “Syphilis Is Serious” campaign to address the growing syphilis epidemic, raise awareness, expand testing and encourage people to seek treatment without fear or judgement.
