Dance for Beirut

Dance for Beirut Dance for Beirut is a fundraising initiative by the Dutch performing arts sector for artists in Beiru Beautiful Beirut is in crisis. Then we had an idea.

The rest of the world sent humanitarian aid. But we learned that artists hardly benefit from it. A few phone calls later something magical happened... the collective consciousness that something had to be done. We decided to throw a party, at a party: the Amsterdam Dance Event. Not just any party. We believe in making a difference: Enhancing the viability and visibility of local communities, nudgi

ng the breakdown of socio-cultural boundaries. And fostering cultural inclusion and tolerance. Our events aim to
• Create awareness about the disaster’s impact
• Build bridges between Dutch and Lebanese culture
• Trigger people to party and get out their wallet

The first Dance for Beirut will be held during the ADE on October 24th 2020. Following the recent Corona measures, we can't dance in public. So we will be broadcasting online from the Kromhouthal, and you can dance in private. The money we raise will go towards supporting the performing arts in Beirut, meaning we will invest money, and our time, into Beirut’s cultural infrastructure, productions and programming. Can you help us? Will you join the Dance for Beirut?

Dear friends,

We saw them, you saw us, you helped them. What a beautiful cycle of energy. We could not have done it without each other. We did it together.

So thank you. Thank you for being a part of this effort to help artists here help artists there. We are very grateful for you support.

What happens next?

Together we raised 9141 euro through voordekunst. 52% of this came from sponsorship with which we could cover technical fees and some of the artists here in NL. 48% comes from you, our crowdfunding heroes! After deduction of costs (voordekunst, some more artist fees and symbolic fees for the organisers) we will send the remaining money (just over 2K) to arts projects in Beirut.

But that's not all. This Dance for Beirut was 'just' the first step in setting up a new foundation, SOLADORETI, a global solidarity fund for the arts. I'm now in conversation with artists, arts and business leaders and other smart people all around the world to think up a good, solid structure for such a charity.

Here in The Netherlands we will soon have a formal Stichting with which we can set an example and continue to raise funds, awareness, network and knowledge for artists and arts organisations who are hit by disaster.

So thank you again, for helping us help others as well as planting the seed for something that will hopefully one day turn into a forest, an ecosystem that protects and supports the creation of beauty.

Yours truly,
Brendan Jan Walsh
initiator Dance for Beirut and SOLADORETI

In these 'Quaran-times' we're all feeling a bit lonely, missing our old lives and social activities. During this holiday season, and ending this strange year, what better way to connect with other people than to support them remotely.
In Lebanon, artists not only have their performances cancelled or restricted due to corona, they've been also enduring the repercussions of the financial crisis, and the losses of spaces and creations caused by the horrific explosion of the 4th of August. Around 4 months have passed and they're still feeling its repercussions every day.
Every donation can support their recovery process.

Grief is a response to loss of someone or something important to us, and that has died. In order to create a space for something new, grief is an essential stage and feeling. Art can help begin this process through creating channels that can help us explore and vent the unspeakable.

At the launch of Dance for Beirut, performing artists shared their stage and grief through music, spoken words, visuals, and dance. Such feelings surfaced in solidarity with their fellow performing artists in Lebanon who have been enduring loss endlessly.

'Dyar' is an Arabic word that means home.
Music has the power of making us feel at home wherever we are in the world. It trespasses all boundaries and borders.

''Music is the language that travels directly from the heart... it is so honest... I can just travel anywhere in the world. I don't speak the language but I can play music".
Nawras Al Taky.

This video made by NTR features the story of the great Ud player and vocalist Nawras Al Taky and the time he met with double bass player Lucas Dols ( Sounds of Change ).
Must watch! Lots of heartwarming messages about the power of music in making our lives happier and more meaningful.

It's a dark day today.
Another emotion that fate dictated during the launch event of Dance for Beirut is Death. Listen to how an emotion as dark as death turned out to be an unexpectedly beautiful emotion. Art has its way of making the saddest and most painful emotions more tolerable and even beautiful sometimes.
Today is Black Friday, as we move slowly towards the end of this tough year, don't forget to donate for a good cause. Turn the wheel of fortune, and support artists bring more art and beauty by donating to Dance for Beirut.

Dance for Beirut is an initiative by artists calling for solidarity with artists in Lebanon. This video is a fragment of a 2 hour show which was completely dictated by Fate spinning the wheel of fortune. Each number on the wheel indicates a different emotion.
This is the artists' reaction to the word: SEDUCTION.

hosted Dance for Beirut last Monday.

A brief of how and why Dance for Beirut started. Performing arts should get the necessary attention and support in crisis situations. Artists play a big part in the fight towards more just, equal, and livable societies. It is important to bring the right attention to their work and provide them with the necessary support.
