UNVEILING OF SAVANNAH CLIMATE RESEARCH CENTRE SCRC WITH RESEARCH FINDINGS PRESENTATION BY PROF A A ADEBAYO ON THE EFFECT OF 2024 PROLONGED DRY SPELL ON CROP PRODUCTION BY SMALL HOLDERS FARMERS IN YOLA ADAMAWA STATE
The Adamawa State Climate Change Sector Working Group (CCSWG) held its monthly meeting on 10th December 2025 at the Women Development Centre, Yola, bringing together government institutions, academia, CSOs, NGOs, and development partners committed to strengthening climate action in the state.
A key highlight of the meeting was the official unveiling of the Savannah Climate Research Centre (SCRC).
The Centre is positioned as a hub for climate research, policy support, innovation, and community-focused climate solutions across the state and the wider savannah Ecological Zone.
During the unveiling, Prof. A. L. Tukur, Chairman, Board of Trustees of SCRC, presented the Centre’s vision and mission, anchored on rigorous science, climate-smart livelihoods, policy engagement, and inclusive partnerships that empower farmers and vulnerable groups to adapt more effectively to climate risks .
This was followed by a detailed research presentation from Prof. A. A. Adebayo, Director of SCRC, who shared findings on the effects of the 2024 prolonged dry spells on smallholder farmers in the Yola area. His study revealed 31–46% reductions in crop yields, with dry spells lasting over 20 consecutive days—a major threat to household nutrition and food security in affected communities .
Partners also provided updates on ongoing climate initiatives across the state part of which is the opportunity gotten by ECF to attend the upcoming 18th National council on Environment at Katsina State and the interest of federal parastatals to replicate the effort of Adamawa state climate actors at the national level. Members reviewed progress on the planned advocacy visit to His Excellency and received updates on the forthcoming Monthly CCSWG Newsletter.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmed commitment to deepen collaboration, promote climate-smart agriculture, support research and innovation, and strengthen community resilience across Adamawa State.
Together, we are building a climate-resilient future for Adamawa.
