🌍 World Obesity Day 2026
Global South Relief – GSR Nigeria
Today, March 4, the world observes World Obesity Day. A call to recognize obesity as a major public health challenge affecting millions globally.
According to the World Health Organization:
37 million children under 5 are living with overweight or obesity. 390 million children and adolescents (5–19 years) are affected, 160 million adults are living with obesity. Nearly 75% reside in low- and middle-income countries. However, in Nigeria and across the Global South, obesity does not exist in isolation.
We are confronting a Triple Burden of Malnutrition:
🔹 Undernutrition (stunting, wasting, underweight)
🔹 Overweight & Obesity
🔹 Micronutrient Deficiencies (“Hidden Hunger”)
It is increasingly common to find:
A stunted child in one household
An overweight adolescent in the same community
A pregnant woman with iron deficiency
An adult living with hypertension linked to obesity.
This paradox reflects deeper systemic challenges:
• Poor food environments
• Rising consumption of ultra-processed foods
• Limited access to diverse, nutrient-rich diets
• Urbanization and sedentary lifestyles
• Weak preventive health systems
Obesity significantly increases the risk of non-communicable diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and stroke, placing additional strain on fragile health systems.
At Global South Relief – GSR Nigeria, we emphasize that addressing obesity requires strengthening food systems, improving nutrition education, protecting children from unhealthy food marketing, and investing in maternal and child nutrition.
Healthy diets must be accessible, affordable, and sustainable.
The time to act is now.

We Are Now Global South Relief.

What started as a community-driven effort under Children’s Future Initiatives Network has grown in scope, responsibility, and ambition.
Today, we are proud to formally launch Global South Relief - a humanitarian and development organization committed to saving lives, restoring dignity, and strengthening resilience across the Global South.
Our focus spans nutrition, health, humanitarian response, cash assistance, and resilience-building for communities affected by conflict, displacement, and climate shocks.

This transition reflects our growth, not a change in values. Our commitment to accountability, community leadership, and impact remains the same.
We look forward to building strong partnerships and delivering meaningful change together.

Children's Future Initiatives Network (CFIN) joined Malteser International and partners today for the official unveiling of the Dusman Women-Led Cooperative for Reusable Sanitary Pads Production Ltd in Dusuman-Jere LGA, Borno State.

This cooperative is a major breakthrough for women’s hygiene, dignity, livelihoods, and environmental protection. The reusable sanitary pads produced here help improve menstrual hygiene, reduce waste, and support climate change adaptation.

As an organization working in WASH, Nutrition, and Livelihood Support, Children's Future Initiatives Network celebrates this milestone and the women driving it.

We are calling on NGOs, development partners, women groups, government agencies, and community cooperatives to patronize the reusable sanitary pads produced by this cooperative.
Your support will help strengthen local production, create sustainable income for women, and expand access to hygienic, eco-friendly menstrual products across our communities.

We appreciate Malteser International for leading this impactful initiative.

CFIN remains committed to supporting community-led solutions that empower women, protect the environment, and build healthier, resilient communities.

Together, we empower women. Together, we build sustainability.

Education should never be a life-threatening decision.

This month alone, Nigeria has witnessed two high-profile abductions of school children in the northern region. These incidents are not just statistics—they represent disrupted dreams, traumatized families, and communities living in fear.

At Children’s Future Initiatives Network (CFIN), we recognize the profound emotional and psychological toll these attacks impose on children and parents. No parent should live with the agony of uncertainty, and no child should be endangered simply for seeking an education.

We are calling for urgent, multi-stakeholder, cross-sector action to safeguard learning environments. Protecting schools is not just a security imperative—it is a national development priority.

CFIN remains committed to driving advocacy, strengthening community systems, and working with partners across government and civil society to ensure that schools remain secure, resilient, and conducive to learning.

No child should risk their life to learn.
No parent should suffer this pain.
The time for coordinated action is now.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DAY — FROM CFIN

Today, we join the global community in celebrating International Men’s Day—a moment to recognize the leadership, resilience, and transformative impact men bring to families, communities, and nation-building.

At Children’s Future Initiatives Network (CFIN), we acknowledge the critical role men play as caregivers, advocates, decision-makers, and partners in advancing child health, protection, and community development. Strength is not only defined by endurance—it is also reflected in empathy, accountability, and the courage to model positive change.

We celebrate all men who continue to champion safer communities, support inclusive growth, and uphold values that strengthen family systems. Your commitment to responsibility, compassion, and integrity is shaping better futures for the next generation.

Today, we reaffirm our commitment to engaging men and boys as allies in our mission to safeguard children’s rights, expand opportunities, and build resilient communities across Nigeria.

Children Future Initiatives Network (CFIN) joins the world in observing World Diabetes Day.

Diabetes is a growing concern, especially in communities with limited access to early testing and quality healthcare. Today’s message reinforces the importance of awareness, prevention, and timely action.
