Fringe Voices Development Foundation, with the support of the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund (NYFF), successfully conducted two Capacity Building Trainings on Accountability Structures for Grassroots Governance (ASGG) in Port Harcourt Local Government Area and Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State.
The engagements brought together youths, women, persons with disabilities (PWDs), community leaders, and NYSC members, creating a safe and inclusive space for dialogue on citizen participation and community engagement. Key thematic areas covered included access to information, understanding local governance and accountability, youth roles in advocacy, social accountability and citizen monitoring, as well as youth leadership, communication, and action planning.
Through interactive discussions and practical sessions, participants gained a deeper understanding of local governance processes, civic participation, advocacy strategies, and citizen monitoring mechanisms. The training also strengthened participants’ confidence to engage public institutions, demand accountability, and contribute meaningfully to decision-making within their communities.
Participants were divided into groups and worked collaboratively to identify pressing local challenges and develop practical action plans. This exercise reinforced the importance of collective responsibility in driving positive community change. Some of the critical issues highlighted during the sessions included lack of electricity, insecurity, underrepresentation of youth, women, and PWDs in governance, voter apathy, and other community concerns. Participants further analyzed the root causes of these challenges and jointly mapped out strategies to address them, while identifying relevant stakeholders to engage in the process.
