DG Message - January 2025

My January Message
Happy 2025, dear friends.
We give God the glory for crossing over to this year, especially as Rotarians.

Honestly, if you're a Rotarian reading this message, then you deserve my special respect and recognition, indeed an award.

Last year has been the most challenging to me as a Rotarian, and I can bet it's the same with most Rotarians.
Please accept my compliments.

The position we found ourselves as Rotarians and the role we play here on earth was ordained in heaven.
Let us not be weary. Our reward has been divinely arranged.

This Rotary year has been truly magical right from the first day. Our programs, events, activities, achievements, and disappointments as well. Despite whatever, we are still standing strong.

We need to double our efforts this 2nd semi-annual going by what we just witnessed this 1st semi-annual.
I passionately plead for all hands to be on deck. If we're to achieve our goals and objectives, we need to work together as friends, which we are, and speak with one voice.

I am aware some clubs are having some misunderstanding and some people have complaints, they are not unexpected, our district is a big one and such things are possible. But please let's use some wisdom in whichever side you find yourself. Remember, it must not always be in your favor. At the district level, we must continue to do our best. We accept that as humans, we are naturally limited and may not always profer the best solution in all cases.

A good way to start the year will be to take stock as a rotarian and as a club, the failures and successes of set goals.
Make amends or build on the successes for a better 2nd semi.

Register for the visit of TRF Trustee Chair, Mark Maloney's visit to Abuja and Lagos on the 15th Jan. If you have given to The Rotary Foundation this year, thank you very much, we'll appreciate it if you can give more. If you're yet to give, please do, do not forget we have an ambitious goal to grow Rotary's Endowment to $2.025 billion by this year, 2025. This will only be possible through the generous support of all of us.
Please check the fliers that have been in circulation for the details of this visit.

For the Presidents, Assistant Governors, and some Committee Chairs, the Mid Year Assembly is 25th Jan.
The trophy and cash prices for 2nd Quarter MEMBERSHIP GROWTH ICON CLUB CHAMPION AWARDS will be presented to the winners at the midyear assembly at Sapele
The 1st quarter champion RC Edjeba will return the trophy.
The 2nd quarter champion will be crowned, and will go home with the trophy for the next three months.

Please endeavor to register for DISCON, which is the climax of the magics.

This is a vocational service month. As usual, let us continue to serve Rotary with our vocations.
"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.ā€ — Mahatma Gandhi.

FINALLY DISTRICT CITATION AWARD FOR THE CLUB THAT ENDS WITH AT LEAST NET GAIN OF 1 OR MAINTAINS ITS 1ST JULY MEMBERSHIP NUMBER

Once more, I wish you all a happy and prosperous 2025 and a fruitful 2nd semi-annual. Together, we shall deliver the magic.

Rtn Chinedu Ikegwuani
District Governor, 9141

RI President’s Message - January, 2025

I always walk into meetings at my home club of McMurray, Pennsylvania, with a smile on my face.

A few years ago, someone arrived late. Instead of scolding the person, we cheered. Since then, we’ve made it a tradition to applaud all members when they arrive for meetings. It’s tough not to smile with a greeting like that.

There’s nothing more powerful for engaging and retaining members than a club that’s vibrant, welcoming, and — yes — fun.

Think back to what drew you to Rotary. Chances are, it wasn’t just the service projects or professional networking. It was the people — the friendships, the shared laughter, and the joy of working toward a common purpose. That’s what keeps us coming back.

If you’re looking for that sense of joy in your meetings, don’t be afraid to ask yourself and your fellow members some tough questions. If you were a prospective member, would you join your current club? It’s a powerful question but don’t stop there.

Do members of your club feel that they belong? Are your meetings fun? If not, what can you do about it together?

At your next meeting or event, try something new to bring out a few extra smiles. It’s the simple things that create lasting bonds and make clubs simply irresistible.

Here’s one example of a club moving in the right direction. The Rotary Club of Fukushima, Japan, has been combining environmental responsibility with community fun since 2021. In Japan, people have made picking up trash into a sport known as SpoGomi, and every year the club hosts a game. This year, more than 400 participants cheered each other on while they came together to improve their community.

This event is an excellent example of how Rotary clubs can have fun, make a difference, and raise awareness for broader global challenges all at the same time. And the inclusive, family-friendly format allows people of all ages to participate.

When we enjoy what we do, that energy becomes contagious. It’s what attracts new members and keeps our clubs strong and engaged. It helps people feel that they belong.

Retention and culture go hand in hand. The healthier our club culture, the more likely members are to stay. Rotary magazine is an outstanding resource for inspiration on how to enhance our club culture and deepen member engagement. I encourage you to explore the stories and strategies in these pages, drawing from other clubs’ successes to find ideas that work for you.

Together, we can create a more engaged, enjoyable, and inclusive Rotary that every member can feel proud to be part of. Let’s continue with renewed commitment and enthusiasm, living The Magic of Rotary.
