At just 19, Ihedimadumma Silverline Ifeanyi is already building a new path for herself through catering.

Before joining Cohort 2 of the Youth Employability Booster programme, implemented by Young Africa Nigeria with support from the Mastercard Foundation, Silverline worked as a sales girl earning ₦35,000 monthly.

After completing her catering training and industrial placement, she was retained at her place of IT as a decorating assistant, where she now earns ₦55,000 biweekly.

Beyond the increase in income, Silverline has gained skills and confidence she never thought possible.

“I can now confidently cover a cake. This is something I never knew I could do, but now I can.”

Her goal is to keep learning, support herself through university, and eventually build a catering brand of her own. Silverline’s journey shows how practical skills training, workplace exposure, and access to real employment opportunities can help young people move towards dignified work and greater economic independence.

At Young Africa Nigeria, we believe that skills have no gender.

Through the Integral Mobile Training under the Youth Employability Booster (YEB) Programme, supported by the Mastercard Foundation, we are creating opportunities for young people to build practical, market-relevant skills while challenging traditional perceptions around who belongs in particular trades.

While our programme maintains at least 75% female representation, we also intentionally create space for young men to develop skills in trades often perceived as female-dominated, including catering, culinary arts and other service-based professions.

Just as we encourage young women to enter traditionally male-dominated trades, we want young men to feel equally empowered to pursue opportunities beyond gender stereotypes. Because opportunity should be defined by interest, talent and potential — not gender.

The transformation is increasingly visible in her earnings. Chiamaka now charges at least ₦90,000 for an event, depending on the size and nature of the engagement. From event jobs alone, she can generate approximately ₦150,000 within a two-week period, subject to the number of bookings secured and associated business costs. This represents a significant change for someone who entered the programme without an independent income-generating activity.

Building Skills for the Digital Creative Economy

Photography, videography and content creation training is currently underway as part of Young Africa Nigeria’s self-implemented Integral Mobile Training, equipping young people with practical, market-relevant skills for today’s digital economy.

With technical support from Mswitch, participants are receiving hands-on training designed to strengthen both their creative and technical capabilities — from working with cameras and studio equipment to producing quality visual content.

Across our ongoing trainings, more than 2,000 young people are currently enrolled, with about 80% being women. This reflects our continued commitment to creating inclusive opportunities and supporting more young women to enter emerging and traditionally underrepresented skills sectors.

So far, Young Africa have trained over 5000 young persons and put about 4,800 into work. At Young Africa, we are not only training young people for jobs — we are equipping them with the skills to create, innovate and build sustainable livelihoods.

Young Africa Nigeria is proud to have participated in the Nigeria Education Group (NEG) Sub-Committee Meeting on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) held at the UN House in Abuja, bringing together the Federal Ministry of Education, UNESCO, the European Union, GIZ, the British Council, NMEC and other key partners working to strengthen Nigeria’s TVET ecosystem.

A major highlight for us was the official inauguration of Young Africa into the NEG Sub-Committee on TVET, an important milestone that strengthens our opportunity to contribute to national conversations, collaboration and action around inclusive, accessible and market-relevant skills development.

During the meeting, we also shared insights from Young Africa’s approach to bringing vocational training closer to communities through practical skills development, entrepreneurship and business mentorship, as well as our innovative franchised TVET model designed to strengthen existing training centres and expand opportunities for young people.

We look forward to working alongside government and development partners to continue advancing a stronger, more responsive and future-focused TVET system for Nigeria’s youth.

At Young Africa, vocational training goes beyond learning a trade. We believe that the skills of the hands and the skills of the mind are equally essential for young people to build sustainable livelihoods and thrive in a changing world.

That is why our Integral Mobile Training approach combines practical, hands-on vocational skills with Life Skills, Entrepreneurship Education and theoretical learning. While participants develop technical competence in their chosen trades, they are also equipped to communicate effectively, solve problems, manage resources, understand their markets, build confidence and think like entrepreneurs.

For us, producing a skilled artisan is only part of the journey. We are developing well-rounded young people who can turn their skills into opportunities, businesses and sustainable pathways to work.

MONDAY NOTE| SKILLS FOR TODAY, SKILLS FOR THE FUTURE

As we begin a new week, we reflect on Young Africa Nigeria’s participation at the National TVET Conference, where our Country Lead, Wellington Muchechetere, shared insights on how Young Africa is preparing young people for a rapidly changing world of work.

At Young Africa, our approach to Technical and Vocational Education and Training goes beyond teaching skills for today. We equip young people with market-relevant, practical and entrepreneurial skills that respond to current industry needs while preparing them for opportunities that will remain relevant in the decades ahead.

From technical and vocational competencies to entrepreneurship, digital capabilities, life skills and employability development, we believe young people must be equipped not only to find work, but also to create opportunities, adapt to change and build sustainable livelihoods.

Our participation at the National TVET Conference reinforces our commitment to contributing to conversations and partnerships that strengthen Nigeria’s skills-development ecosystem and ensure that TVET remains responsive to the realities of young people and the evolving labour market.

Young Africa Nigeria continues to equip young people with practical, hands-on skills that can open pathways to decent work and entrepreneurship.

At Benin Technical College, Edo State, young trainees are currently building skills in leatherworks, including footwear production, shoemaking, bag making and other leather craft techniques.

Through this training, Young Africa Nigeria remains committed to reaching young women, underserved young people and vulnerable groups with opportunities to develop the skills of both the hands and the mind—building confidence, creativity and livelihoods for the future.
