Sickle Cell Disease ~
Avascular necrosis (AVN), or osteonecrosis, is the death of bone tissue due to a temporary or permanent loss of blood supply, often leading to joint collapse. It frequently affects the hip, knee, or shoulder, causing pain, reduced mobility, and joint destruction, with long-term prognosis often requiring joint replacement.
At early stage it mostly asymptomatic, no pain. But as it progresses, pain occur mostly when pressure is applied on the affected joint. At the late stages pain becomes severe accompanied by stiffness of hip joint and limping.
Avascular necrosis is commonly associated with sickle cell patient due to lack of blood supply to the hip joint. Million of people across Nigeria are suffering from this and the only lasting solution to this condition is hip replacement surgery at the late stages. It usually cost between N5m -N10m per patient.
Together we can provide care and support for people living with this condition.
