RYLA 2026: DAY 1

The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) 2026 has officially commenced!
Participants of Rotary District 9142 arrived in Aba, Abia State, for this year’s leadership development experience themed:
“Be a STAR: Lead with Service, Teamwork in Action for Greater Results.”

Upon arrival at the camp, participants were received and assigned to their various houses and groups. This was followed by an orientation session where the camp structure and ground rules guiding the 2026 RYLA experience were introduced.

With the stage set for learning, personal growth, leadership development, teamwork and fellowship, we look forward to an exciting and impactful experience in the days ahead.

Meet Blessing Rufus

Meet Blessing Rufus II, a Teacher and Chef who is currently on her journey towards becoming a Rotaractor.

Blessing’s interest in Rotary and Rotaract began with a desire to be part of something that goes beyond career growth.

“I wanted to be part of a community focused on service, leadership, and making real impact.”
Before beginning her learning journey, she saw Rotary as an organisation mainly for older professionals and Rotaract as simply a youth club that carried out charity projects.
But she has since discovered something much bigger.

She has been impressed by how structured, professional, and global the Rotary and Rotaract network is. Most importantly, the value of Service Above Self has stood out to her.

For Blessing, service is not simply about carrying out projects. It is about developing people who are committed to consistently solving problems and making a difference in their communities.

Her journey so far has been eye-opening and inspiring.
She has particularly enjoyed learning about the Seven Areas of Focus and the different service projects through which Rotary and Rotaract address real community needs. As a Teacher and Chef, she has also discovered that individual skills and talents can be used to contribute to meaningful change.
One lesson that has stayed with her is simple but powerful:
“Leadership is service. True impact isn’t about a title. It’s about showing up for people and solving problems together.”

She recently attended the Maternal and Child Health Project, where she experienced firsthand how organised, welcoming, purpose-driven, and passionate Rotarians and Rotaractors can be about service.
And after everything she has learned so far, Blessing feels excited and ready for the journey ahead.

She sees Rotaract as the right community to grow, serve, connect, and learn alongside people who are also committed to building themselves and others.
If she eventually becomes a member, she hopes to bring her energy, willingness to learn, communication skills, and organisational abilities to the club.

Her journey towards becoming a Rotaractor has taught her that:
“Impact starts when you decide to show up and serve others, not just yourself.”
And if she could describe Rotary and Rotaract in three words, they would be:
Service.
Leadership.
Fellowship.
Service, because it is at the core of everything they do.
Leadership, because members are given opportunities to learn and lead with integrity.
Fellowship, because it is a community where people grow together.

MEMBERSHIP SPOTLIGHT
Meet Virtue Mbono

Meet Rtr. Virtue Mbono , a Special Educator and Inclusive Coach, and a member of the Rotaract E-Club of Ibom Cosmopolitan.

When asked how she explains Rotaract to someone unfamiliar with it, Virtue describes it as more than belonging to a club or attending meetings.
“It is about people coming together to serve their communities, build meaningful relationships, develop leadership skills, and make a positive difference in the lives of others.”

What surprised her most about Rotaract was discovering just how much can be achieved when people with different professions, ideas, and skills come together with one purpose:

SERVICE.

For Virtue, the two parts of Rotaract she enjoys the most are service and personal growth. She values knowing that even a little contribution can be useful to someone else, while the Rotaract experience continues to challenge her to step outside her comfort zone, connect with different people, and become a better version of herself.

As a Special Educator working with children with special educational needs, inclusion and advocacy are deeply important to her. Rotaract gives her an avenue to bring her passion for service, education, and inclusion into something bigger.
In her words:

“My profession is not just a career; it is also a tool through which I can contribute to my community.”

One Rotary value that has greatly influenced her is Service Above Self. It constantly reminds her to look beyond herself and consider how her actions can benefit others.
Her advice to anyone considering Rotaract is to experience a community service project firsthand.

“You get to see that the work you are doing is not just a club activity; it has a real impact on someone’s life.”

So, why should someone join Rotaract?

Virtue believes that Rotaract gives you the opportunity to grow while making a difference.

You meet people, discover your strengths, develop leadership skills, serve others, and become part of something bigger than yourself.

She also believes that members have a responsibility to make the club welcoming by ensuring that everyone feels seen, heard, valued, and encouraged to participate.

What makes the Rotaract E-Club of Ibom Cosmopolitan unique to her is the ability to connect and serve beyond physical boundaries, bringing together people from different locations, professions, experiences, and perspectives.

COLOURS OF CONNECTION, FELLOWSHIP AND NEW BEGINNINGS

Today, the Rotaract E-Club of Ibom Cosmopolitan and the Rotaract Club of Akwa Ibom State College of Nursing Sciences, Eket, came together for an exciting Colour Picnic and Membership Fellowship themed:
“Colours of Connection: From Intending to Belonging.”

What began as a gathering of Rotaractors and intending members soon became an afternoon of learning, laughter, games, music, networking and meaningful conversations.

We were privileged to have Rtn. Cyril Akwanfon, PHF, lead an insightful session on Rotary and Rotaract, sharing valuable knowledge about the organisation, its history and its activities. An interactive question-and-answer session followed, giving participants the opportunity to learn and engage even further.

Of course, it wasn't all serious business! 😄 There were fun games, songs, networking, fellowship, refreshments and plenty of opportunities to build new connections.
We were also honoured by the presence of the President of the Rotary Club of Eket, who joined us during the fellowship.

The day reminded us that membership is more than joining an organisation. It is about finding a community, building genuine relationships, learning together and growing into a place where you truly belong.

A special appreciation to the Rotaract Club of Akwa Ibom State College of Nursing Sciences, Eket, for co-hosting this beautiful fellowship with us, and to everyone who attended and contributed to its success.

THE INTENDING ROTARACTOR SPOTLIGHT.

Meet Adline Ekperikpe II, a Microbiologist and Fashion Designer currently on her journey towards becoming a Rotaractor.

For Adline, the journey began with a simple desire: to help people and contribute in whatever little way she can. She enjoys volunteering for projects that improve people’s well-being and saw Rotary and Rotaract as platforms where she could contribute her time and skills while making a meaningful impact.

But her first impression of Rotary and Rotaract? 😂
“At first, I honestly thought it was a book club.”
Later, she thought it was simply a charity organisation. Today, her perspective is very different.
One thing that surprised her most was the friendliness and humour among members. She expected everyone to be serious all the time, only to discover that service, learning, and fellowship can also come with plenty of laughter.

So far, her journey has been inspiring and exciting. She has particularly enjoyed learning about Rotary’s Seven Areas of Focus, which helped her understand the wide range of issues Rotary and Rotaract address around the world.

One important lesson that has stayed with her is about leadership:
Leadership is not something you are simply born with. It is something you learn and develop over time through discipline, focus, resilience, and a willingness to keep learning.
Although she is yet to attend a Rotary or Rotaract event, Adline is already looking forward to RYLA 2026 and a Disease Prevention and Treatment outreach. She looks forward to learning, connecting with others, receiving leadership training, and contributing to service that directly benefits the community.

She admits that the responsibilities of becoming a Rotaractor makes her a little nervous, but she is also genuinely excited about joining a community that values service and personal growth.

And what does she believe she can bring to the journey?
Her time, intellect, skills, ideas, and willingness to serve.

Her journey so far has taught her something powerful:
“You can’t build confidence while staying in the shadows. You have to put yourself out there, make mistakes, learn from them, and grow.”
If she were to describe Rotary and Rotaract in three words, they would be:
Service.
Growth.
Resilience.

THE INTENDING ROTARACTOR SPOTLIGHT.

Meet Ubong Essien, a Nursing professional currently on his journey towards becoming a Rotaractor.

Ubong is not entirely new to Rotaract. He was once a member of the Rotaract Club at the School of Nursing, Ikot Ekpene. However, he admits that he did not fully engage with the opportunity at the time.
After graduation, that began to change.

As he paid closer attention to the impact of the Rotary Foundation and the work being done across communities and around the world, his perspective shifted.
What was once simply “a club I joined” became something much bigger:
“A global system doing serious work.”

Now, as an Intending Rotaractor, Ubong is approaching the journey differently. He describes his learning experience as refreshing and motivating, with every session and experience giving him a deeper appreciation of what Rotary and Rotaract represent.

One experience that particularly stood out to him was attending the inaugural fellowship of the Rotary Club of Uyo Metropolis.
“I loved the vibe and the sense of purpose in the room. It made the whole idea of Rotary feel real and alive rather than abstract.”

Because the fellowship coincided with Rotary's Maternal and Child Health Month, the session also gave him a deeper understanding of how targeted and well-organised service can directly improve and save lives.

Today, Ubong feels genuinely excited about the possibility of becoming a Rotaractor again, but this time with a greater understanding and real intention.

And what does he hope to bring?
A genuine commitment, meaningful connections, and a fresh sense of purpose.

His journey has also taught him something powerful:
“What you don't fully show up for the first time, you can return to with purpose and get right the second time.”

If he were to describe Rotary and Rotaract in just three words, they would be: Impactful. Purposeful. Connective.
And perhaps that perfectly captures where his journey is today.

MEMBERSHIP SPOTLIGHT | MEET Rtr. AKWAOWO OWOIDIGHE AKPAN

Meet Rtr. Akwaowo Owoidighe Akpan, a Nurse and Health & Environmental Sustainability Advocate.

When asked how he explains Rotaract to someone who knows nothing about it, his answer is simple:

Rotaract is a service-oriented organisation.
But joining Rotaract has shown him that there is much more to the journey, including service, networking, personal development, and opportunities to reach more people with his skills and talents.

And one thing that surprised him when he joined?
The number of abbreviations! 😁
For Rtr. Akwaowo, Rotaract has provided a platform and more opportunities to reach people with his skills and talents while also giving him an avenue to refine those skills.
One value that the Rotaract experience has helped him amplify is service to others.

If someone truly wants to understand what Rotaract represents, he recommends joining a team of Rotaractors during a service project.
“It will give them a good picture of what Rotaract represents.”

So, why join Rotaract when there are many other organisations?
“There are many service-oriented organisations, but few come close to Rotaract in putting it into action.”

What makes the Rotaract E-Club of Ibom Cosmopolitan unique to him is the “E” in our name, the fact that physical presence does not have to be a hindrance to fellowship and service to humanity.

And what can members do to make a club more attractive?

Develop yourself and stand out. When members grow and excel, they naturally become examples that can inspire and attract others.

Meet Rtr. Emem Edet Okon, a photographer, educator, and creative professional who brings her passion and creativity into service.

For Emem, Rotaract is much more than being part of an organisation. It is a community of young people who come together to serve, grow, lead, build meaningful relationships, and create positive change.

One thing that surprised her about Rotaract was the diversity of people it brings together. Different backgrounds. Different professions. Different skills. Yet, everyone is united by a common purpose: service and making a difference.

As a photographer and creative, Emem has found a way to use her skills for something bigger.

“It gives my creativity a purpose beyond just taking beautiful pictures.”

Through photography and content creation, she can help document activities, tell stories, promote projects, and create awareness about the impact of service.

The Rotary value that continues to influence her most is Service Above Self. For her, it is a reminder that our talents, knowledge, and abilities can be used to positively impact the lives of others.

Her advice to anyone considering joining Rotaract?

Join because Rotaract gives you the opportunity to serve, learn, lead, connect, and grow, all at the same time.
