CITN TAKES TAX AWARENESS CAMPAIGN TO UYO STREETS, MARKET

Mary Ekere

The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), Uyo and District Society, on Thursday took its 2026 National Tax Awareness Campaign to the streets and major highways of Uyo, engaging residents and traders on the importance of tax compliance as a catalyst for national development.

The awareness walk, held as part of the 2026 National Tax Awareness Week, commenced from the State Secretariat through Ibom Plaza and terminated at the Revenue House along Udo Udoma Avenue.

The campaign, themed "Tax Awareness for National Growth: Reforms, Compliance and Shared Prosperity", was organised by the CITN Uyo and District Society in collaboration with the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service (AKIRS).

Leading the exercise, the Chairman of CITN Uyo and District Society, DCNS Idorenyin Charles William, explained that the awareness campaign was aimed at educating citizens on their civic responsibility to pay taxes and dispelling misconceptions surrounding taxation.

Addressing traders and residents during a stopover at Etuk Market, William distinguished taxes from levies, stressing that taxes are statutory payments backed by law and are essential for financing public infrastructure and social services, while levies are specific charges imposed for designated purposes. He urged citizens to embrace voluntary tax compliance, noting that prompt tax payment remains critical to sustainable development and improved public service delivery.

Also speaking, the Comptroller of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Uyo, Mr. Mukoro Johnson, enlightened participants on the tax payment process, taking them through taxpayer registration, assessment and payment procedures. He encouraged individuals and business owners yet to register to do so, assuring them that the tax administration system has become more transparent and taxpayer-friendly.

The awareness walk ended at the Revenue House, where participants were received by the Executive Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service (AKIRS), Sir Okon Okon. He commended the CITN Uyo and District Society for sustaining public enlightenment on taxation, describing tax awareness as indispensable to increasing voluntary compliance and strengthening government revenue.

Sir Okon noted that taxes remain the lifeblood of government, funding critical infrastructure, education, healthcare, security and other public services. He urged residents of the state to see tax payment not as a burden but as a civic responsibility and an investment in the collective prosperity of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria.

Members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), students and other members of the public participated in the awareness walk, reinforcing the campaign's message of shared responsibility in nation-building through tax compliance.
