2 weeks ago, in commemoration of Global week of climate action, Activista Akwa Ibom joined Ambeghe Movement as well as other youth networks across Ikot Ekpene, Ibeno, Oron and Etinan to drive climate education in Uyo.

Young people are key in driving climate action, and without climate awareness, there can be no climate action. This session covered climate change fundamentals, local environmental impacts and practical actions that students can take.

Through this programme, there is a growing interest for the establishment of green clubs in schools which is a strategic step in ensuring that climate education is localised, building capacity of young people to take action.

With climate impacts accelerating across Nigeria, adaptation is no longer optional- it is urgent. This requires resources that are scaled up, transparent, and people-centred.

Too often, climate finance stops at government offices instead of reaching frontline communities. Women, youth, and vulnerable groups must be part of decisions on how these funds are allocated and spent.

We call on governments at all levels to:
- Scale up climate finance delivery with clear allocations for adaptation and resilience.
- Establish transparent mechanisms to ensure funds reach local communities.
- Guarantee youth and vulnerable groups are meaningfully represented in all climate finance planning and decision-making spaces.

Climate justice means ensuring that resources reach those who bear the greatest burden of the crisis and empowering them to shape the solutions.

Join us this Global Week of Climate Action as we amplify youth voices and call on leaders to make climate action people-centred.

Climate change is not a distant threat, it is already here. In Akwa Ibom, rising sea levels, flooding, and oil-related ecological damage are displacing families, destroying farmlands, and disrupting livelihoods. Every delay in action will cost communities more lives, jobs, and futures.

The pathway forward is clear. Akwa Ibom must adopt and fund a State Climate Action Plan that prioritises renewable energy, green jobs, and agroecology.

We therefore call on the Akwa Ibom State Government to:

- Develop and fund a State Climate Action Plan.
- Make significant state investments in green jobs.
- Prioritise renewable energy and agroecology in the state budget.

Join us this Global Week of Climate Action as we amplify youth voices and call on leaders to make climate action people-centred.

From the 15th – 20th September 2025, we are joining voices with other Youth-led organizations across the world to mark the Global Climate Week of Action, a week dedicated to moving beyond promises into bold, measurable climate action.

This is not just another awareness week. It is a call to act, not just talk. Young people, communities, and movements everywhere are rising together to demand:
✅ Transparent and inclusive climate policies.
✅ Measurable commitments with clear timelines.
✅ Climate justice and equity for those most affected.
✅ Real solutions that secure our shared future

This Change starts now, not later.
This week, we will amplify youth voices, push for accountability, and highlight actions that protect people and the planet.

Join us. Speak up. Act now. Together, let’s turn words into action and ensure a future that works for all.

In many parts of Akwa Ibom, the dream of quality education is dimmed by unsafe school buildings, lack of learning materials, and overcrowded classrooms. In some rural communities, students learn in dilapidated structures with leaking roofs, while many lack access to libraries, science labs, or even basic desks and chairs. These poor conditions result in low literacy rates, high dropout numbers, especially for children from low-income families and limit young people’s chances to compete in today’s knowledge-driven economy. Without safe and supportive learning environments, quality education remains out of reach for many.

Youth Spotlight: Abraham Sylvester Asukwo through Excelling Youth Initiative is bridging this gap by supporting education in rural communities through setting up community libraries and running literacy and digital literacy programs. His work not only provides students with access to books and learning resources but also equips them with skills for the future.

Call to Action: Government and education stakeholders should:
Invest in safe, well-equipped school infrastructure.
Provide adequate and accessible learning materials to every child.
Support youth-led education programs that improve literacy and bridge the digital divide.

Education is the foundation for sustainable development. Every child deserves it.

It's GBV month! What do you know about Gender Based Violence?

In our ongoing fight against GBV, ACTIVISTA Akwa Ibom took the message of Gender Based Violence to the local market in Idu, Uruan LGA, Akwa Ibom.

At the market, we sensitized, the traders, interacted with them, and laid emphasis on the need to eradicate the societal menace of GBV.
We are committed to creating and fostering an enabling environment free of violence, and inequalities.

In our ongoing fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), ACTIVISTA Akwa Ibom, in partnership with Clement Isong Foundation ActionAid Nigeria and AKSG Gender Based Violence Management Committee paid a special visit to St. Andrew’s Primary School, Idu, a rural community in Akwa Ibom State.

We sensitized the pupils and teachers on the dangers of GBV, how to speak up, and where to get help. It was a heartwarming session filled with learning, hope, and encouragement for the young ones.

To wrap up, we distributed essential items to the pupils, a simple gesture to remind them they are seen, valued, and protected.

Together, we are raising a generation that says NO to violence and YES to safe, inclusive communities.

Today, we bring our World Environment Day campaign to an end. But the work to end plastic pollution continues. The last best time to have taken action was yesterday. The next best time is NOW. Let us continue to work collaboratively towards achieving a net-zero plastic-free world.
