African Climate Justice Caravan – Nigeria (Uyo Walk)

Organized by: African Climate Justice Caravan (Nigeria) in collaboration with the Aniedi Inyang Foundation (ANIF), Oxfam, Eco Network, and other South‑South civil‑society organisations
Background & Purpose
The African Climate Justice Caravan (Nigeria) convened a Climate Justice Walk in Uyo as part of a nationwide advocacy campaign for a Just Transition for Africa. Held ahead of COP 30, the walk aimed to raise public awareness of climate‑related threats to energy and food systems, engage local communities, and strengthen civil‑society voices calling for fair, equitable and rights‑based climate policies.

- Permanent Secretary: Barr. (Mrs.) Iquo Abia – presented with the African Climate Justice Caravan message by the ANIF Founder during the closing ceremony.
Event Overview
Approximately 250 participants attended, including students, market women, farmers, local government officials, partner NGOs and media. The programme featured:
- Opening remarks by Hon. (Mrs.) Aniedi Inyang‑JP
- A symbolic “green march” along Brooks Street
- Panel discussions on renewable energy and sustainable agriculture
- Cultural performances by local artists
- Pledge‑signing ceremony
Outcomes
1. Awareness: Over 5,000 people reached on‑site and online, increasing understanding of the link between fossil‑fuel dependence and local food‑production challenges.
2. Policy Commitments: The State Commissioner for Environment pledged a Renewable Energy Integration Plan for Akwa Ibom by Q2 2026 and a 2 % budget allocation to climate‑adaptation projects.
3. Community Pledges: More than 120 participants signed the “Uyo Climate Justice Pledge,” committing to tree‑planting, waste reduction and support for climate‑smart agriculture.
4. Network Strengthening: New partnerships formed between local CSOs and national/international actors, paving the way for joint Green Climate Fund proposals.
5. Documentation: A 7‑minute documentary and photo essay were produced for pre‑COP 30 advocacy.

- Africa’s transition to low‑carbon energy must be equitable, providing alternative livelihoods for communities dependent on fossil fuels.
- Addressing climate change is inseparable from securing food systems; renewable energy and sustainable agriculture reinforce each other.

Next Steps
- Stakeholder workshop in December 2025 to develop an implementation roadmap for the State’s Renewable Energy Integration Plan.
- Grant applications with Oxfam and Eco Network for a joint Green Climate Fund proposal by March 2026.
- Pilot “Solar‑Powered Irrigation” scheme in two farming communities by June 2026.
- Advocacy at COP 30: Present the Uyo Climate Justice Pledge and documentary at the Africa Pavilion.
