QUEEN MOTHER’S EMPOWERMENT FOUNDATION TAKES GBV AWARENESS CAMPAIGN TO SECONDARY SCHOOL

In a bid to combat gender-based violence (GBV) and promote dignity and safety, the Queen Mother’s Empowerment Foundation (QMEF) held a GBV awareness outreach at Five Town Comprehensive Secondary School, Afaha Nsit, in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The outreach, which took place on June 20, 2025, brought together over 150 students, both boys and girls, aged between 10 and 17 years, for an engaging and enlightening session on the dangers and consequences of gender-based violence.

The program was designed to educate students on the types, signs, and legal implications of GBV, as well as to equip them with knowledge on how to report abuse, was part of activity to mark the GBV awareness month in Akwa Ibom State.

The outreach was done in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, and the Coalition Against GBV in Akwa Ibom State.

Speaking during the event, Dorothy Edet, a GBV advocate from Ministry of Justice, emphasised the importance of early education in preventing GBV, stating that young people must be empowered with the right information to recognize and speak out against abuse.

The outreach featured an interactive presentation, a Q&A session, and the distribution of GBV awareness materials, including flyers with reporting mechanisms for students who may experience or witness abuse. School authorities also received materials to support ongoing education on GBV.

A key component of the outreach was a session on menstrual hygiene which was facilitated by Miss Idongesit Ideh, a Menstrual Hygiene Advocate, who sensitised the students on proper menstrual health practices. Sanitary pads were also distributed to ensure that no girl misses school due to lack of menstrual products.

Similarly, the QMEF Program Officer for Akwa Ibom State, Dr Emmanuel Umoh, charged the students to take the messages shared with them very seriously. He stressed that they must work together to protect each other in school by looking out for their fellow classmates and report abuse to the numbers on the flyers distributed.

He further hinted that QMEF has been strategically implementing programs that address the safety of children, women and girls and will not stop to ensure our society is safe for everyone.

The Programs Director for QMEF, Ndifreke Enefiok in her overview of what the organisation has been doing, revealed that QMEF is particular about the equality, equity and dignity of everyone and is working on creating more awareness and providing a safe space for ongoing education and support.

QMEF Distributes Sanitary Pads to 150 Schoolgirls to Mark World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025

In commemoration of the World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025, the Queen Mother's Empowerment Foundation (QMEF) took its campaign to A.M.E Zion Secondary Commercial School, Ndon Ebom, Uruan Local Government Area, where 150 schoolgirls were educated on the proper use of pads, drug use, sexual and reproductive health and menstrual hygiene.

The outreach, held on Thursday, 29 May, was to mark this year's celebration with the theme, "Together for a ,” and sought to demystify menstruation while promoting menstrual hygiene, girls rights, and confidence among adolescent girls.

The target Population of the schoolgirls age 13-17 received a pack of sanitary pads and snacks as part of QMEF'S commitment to ensuring period dignity and reducing period poverty in underserved communities.

Speaking at the outreach, Dr Ukeme Umoren, Chairperson of QMEF, urged the girls to place value on themselves and not allow societal expectations or early relationships define their worth.

“You are not anybody's personal property. You are not a commodity to be acquired by a man. You must find your purpose because there is a bigger reason why you are here. You are whole, you are capable, and you must first learn to love and value yourself before anyone else can,” she said in her opening remarks.

The outreach featured educating sessions facilitated by experts and advocates from Heartland Alliance, Arete Ladies, and Milestone Initiative. Topics addressed included menstrual hygiene management, sexual and reproductive health, drug use awareness, and gender-based violence.

QMEF Programmes Director, Ndifreke Enefiok, charged the students to dream beyond their current limitations and environment.

“You're the only person that can limit yourself. That you're sitting in a classroom like this doesn’t mean you can’t become a doctor, an engineer, or anything you set your heart on. Dream bigger. See beyond these walls,” she said.

Esther Asuquo, a staff of Heartland Alliance, addressed the issue of drug abuse and its link to risky behaviours among adolescents. She urged the girls to remain focused and find safe, healthy coping mechanisms during peer pressure and emotional changes.

“Say no to drugs, say yes to your future. Every decision you make today determines the life you’ll live tomorrow,” she advised.

Idongesit Ideh from Arete Ladies took the students through basic menstrual hygiene practices, stressing the importance of self-care and cleanliness during menstruation.

“You deserve to feel confident and clean throughout your period. Menstruation is not a shameful thing. It’s a sign that you are growing, and you must treat yourself with respect,” she said.

She also demonstrated the proper way to place sanitary pads on pants, including how to dispose of them after every use.

Victoria Ikpat, a staff from Milestone Initiative took the students on gender-based violence, how to report abuse and the dangers of not speaking up. She educated the girls about their bodies, their rights, and encouraged them to speak out when something feels wrong and reminded them of the importance of consent and self-protection.

The outreach was met with overwhelming appreciation from the school management, who praised QMEF for its timely intervention and commitment to the development of the girl-child.

In an emotional appeal, they encouraged the foundation to consider establishing a Menstrual Hygiene Club in the school to offer continued mentorship and support, a proposal QMEF has now committed to implementing.

No girl should be ashamed for menstruating or silenced. At QMEF, we understand what silence looks like particularly for rural girls who miss school, hide pain, and internalise shame over something as natural as menstruation.

We see schools without toilets, girls without pads, and communities without the right information. Today as the world marks Menstrual Hygiene Day, we join stakeholders and relevant agencies to call for a where girls feel a sense of dignity and safety.

As part of our effort and to match our actions, we're taking the message of menstrual hygiene and health to A.M.E Zion Secondary School, Ndon Ebom, Uruan LGA. We are also distributing sanitary pads to 200 schoolgirls.

Why are we doing this?

We are doing this...

Because a girl who can manage her period safely is a girl who can stay in school, speak up with confidence, and grow into a woman who leads.

At QMEF we stand together for a where no girl is ever left behind because of her period.

Queen Mother’s Empowerment Foundation Commissions Water Project in Ikot Obio Inyang Community

After decades of water scarcity and reliance on unsafe sources, Ikot Obio Inyang community in Etinan Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, today received an intervention with the commissioning of a clean water project by the Queen Mother’s Empowerment Foundation (QMEF).

The project, officially commissioned on Saturday, April 5 2025, is part of QMEF’s contribution to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on clean water and sanitation.

This project aims to improve the health and wellbeing of residents who have endured long years of hardship accessing safe water.

Prior to the intervention, villagers particularly women and girls travelled long distances daily in search of water, often returning with murky and contaminated supplies filled with leeches, leading to a range of health issues.

The newly installed facility, powered by a generating set also donated by the Foundation, now provides the community with clean, safe, and accessible water. The commissioning ceremony was done by Mrs Otu, QMEF’s Financial Coordinator and an indigene of the community, who played a key role in facilitating the project.

At the commissioning, Community representatives expressed deep appreciation for the gesture, noting its symbolic and practical impact.

The representatives who highlighted the importance of the project being facilitated by a female indigene, said it reflects on how the education of girls, once a rarity in the village has now begun to yield tangible benefits for the entire community.

They pledged to protect the facility and ensure it is maintained for sustainable use.

Chairperson of QMEF, Dr Ukeme Umoren, expressed her satisfaction with the completion of the project and commended the community for their support throughout the implementation process.

She emphasised the Foundation’s commitment to grassroots development and reiterated the importance of clean water as a basic human right and a catalyst for improved public health.

Also speaking at the event, QMEF’s Akwa Ibom State Programme Officer, Dr Emmanuel Umoh, thanked the community for their cooperation and assured that the Foundation would continue to implement projects that promote development, equity, and social inclusion.

He also outlined other QMEF initiatives, including advocacy against gender-based violence, scholarships for children from low-income families, food support for vulnerable women, and empowerment programmes for persons with disabilities.
