The Story of Impact: Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies
The Journey Begins
On a sunlit morning in Akwa Ibom State, members of the Rotaract club of Uniuyo Annex, Rotaract Club of Uyo City, and the Rotaract Club AKSCONS Ikot Ekpene and STEPS foundation embarked on a joint mission toward the Primary Health Center in Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin LGA. Loaded with supplies, medical gear, and a shared vision, the volunteers arrived early to transform the venue into a vibrant community health hub.
Quietly and methodically, the team hung up their main project banner announcing their initiative: "Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies: A Maternal and Child Health Project."
Compassionate Care in Action
As local mothers and their young children gathered inside the health center's hall, the volunteers sprang into action. Trained healthcare volunteers wearing protective gloves and face masks set up screening tables:
• Vital Health Checks: Volunteers carefully administered blood tests, taking tiny drop samples to screen mothers and ensure early detection of health conditions.
• Child Examinations: Medical volunteers equipped with stethoscopes performed routine check-ups on toddlers and infants, offering gentle re-assurance to worried mothers.
• Warm Connections: Shared laughter and encouraging words filled the room, turning a routine medical visit into a comforting community gathering.
Essential Provisions & Outreach
Healthcare support went beyond medical checks. Recognizing the practical needs of young families, the Rotaract team unboxed and distributed vital healthcare packages:
• Insecticide-Treated Nets: Blue mosquito nets (Permanet) were handed directly to mothers to protect their newborns from malaria.
• Care Bundles: Essential maternal goods, Consumables , and baby care essentials were packed and gifted to each family present.
• Community Education: Rotaract leaders engaged directly with mothers in the waiting areas, sharing tips on maternal wellness, polio prevention, and proper child nutrition.
A Shared Triumph
As the project drew to a close, volunteers and community members gathered inside and outside the facility to capture memories of the day.
