September: Su***de Prevention Awareness Month
September reminds us of something we must never stop talking about: su***de prevention.
For too long, conversations around su***de have been surrounded by silence, stigma, fear, and misinformation. But silence does not make the pain disappear.
Su***de prevention begins with awareness, compassion, connection, and access to appropriate support.
Behind the words “I’m fine” may be someone struggling to cope. Behind withdrawal may be someone who feels alone.
And sometimes, what a person needs most is not judgment or quick answers but someone willing to listen, stay present, and help them find support.
This month, let us:
💜 Learn the facts and challenge harmful myths about su***de.
💜 Pay attention to people who may be struggling.
💜 Create safe spaces where people can talk about emotional pain without shame.
💜 Encourage people to seek professional help when they need it.
💜 Check in on our friends, families, colleagues, and communities.
💜 Remember that asking someone how they are doing can be an important act of care.
No one should have to suffer in silence.
If you are struggling, please know that reaching out for help is not a weakness.
You deserve support, and you do not have to face difficult moments alone.
As we observe Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, let us choose compassion over judgment, connection over isolation, and hope over silence.
At Support Persons in Trauma Initiative (SPITI), we believe that people affected by trauma deserve to be heard, supported, and empowered to rewrite their stories.
Let’s be the reason someone feels safe enough to reach out.
