July 8, 2023, was EZZA New Yam festival, which is traditionally celebrated as the first New Yam festival in all Ezza communities across Nigeria. The festival holds a special significance for the EZZA community and is known as the Oke-Aku aka (nne efi oha) Festival.

This festival marks the beginning of a new calendar year for the EZZA people and signifies the end of the planting season, specifically the planting of yam. Yam holds great cultural importance in EZZA land and throughout Igboland, as it is regarded as the most important crop.

The EZZA community, descendants of EZEKUNA and ANYIGO, is one of the largest clans in Igboland even across Nigeria, with twenty-two traditional communities and over 10,000 villages in Ebonyi, Enugu, and Benue states. Their ancestral headquarters is located in ONUEKE, Ezza South LGA of Ebonyi state.

The Oke-Aku Festival is celebrated in all EZZA towns, villages, and homes, with offerings made at the shrine of Ezekuna (Nguji Ozo Ezekuna) in Amana ONUEKE. The shrine, believed to be the grave of Ezekuna, their progenitor, is a place where sacrifices are offered to ensure a prosperous and death-free new year.

According to belief, no one is allowed to harvest, sell, or eat new yam anywhere in Ezza land until the Oke-Aku festival is observed. Failure to adhere to this tradition is said to result in fatal repercussions and unfortunate events within the disobedient person's family. Sacrifices are made to appease the gods and prevent these consequences.

The day before the Orie Oke-Aku festival, known as Eke-Uwhu-Awha-Lunaa-Awha, is designated for making purchases. The night before the feast is considered a holy night, where old things are symbolically driven away, and the new year is welcomed with the beating of drums and shouts of "Ejo-Awha Laaoo!" (unfruitful year has gone).

On the day of the feast, called Ishi-nééwhi-oha (Oke-aku day), a special place is designated in front of each compound to deposit all yam peels, unripened palm kernels, a small chicken, and peppers. This is done to honor family members who died without children (Ejo-maa or bad spirit).

In Ezekuna's compound in Amana, ONUEKE, the elders responsible for looking after Ezekuna's palm farm gather to share the kernel and oil for the year among the descendants of Ezekuna. Representatives from all Ezza communities come to collect their share of the kernels and oil. Upon returning home, these representatives are welcomed by their family members with a Kola plate, old yam, Aku-Nsuaku (kernel), Kola nut, coconut, and meat, marking the beginning of the festival. The representatives then bless their family members and distribute slices of the old yam to their wives, neighbors, and well-wishers. The celebration is initiated by the head of each family, who sits on his okpoku.

Today in history👍

This is the SUSPENSION BRIDGE AT EDIENE ABAK on the Uyo-Abak Dual Carriage Road in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

It was constructed by Julius Berger and commissioned in September, 2014.

It is currently the tallest Bridge in Akwa Ibom State with an elevation of over 50 Metres above the ground, and a length of 700 metres.

Apart from being a dual bridge that links Abak Town to the Capital City of Uyo, it is one of the most beautiful bridges in Nigeria as it 'hangs' majestically across a ravine and a river, with aesthetics and kaleidoscopic views that will engage the eyes of the tourists and make them long for more.

The amazing TILAPIA RESORT is located just under this bridge.

Julius Berger did an amazing work here, especially when viewed from under. The pillars are just so high. It is a tourist delight indeed.

ALA IGBO SITES AND SOUNDS

The Ogbaukwu Caves and Waterfalls are located in Owerre Ezeukala; a community that borders three other states: Abia, Enugu and Imo.

The Ogba Ukwu cave is considered to be one of the largest caves in West Africa. It forms a deep and complex rock formation with roomy compartments large enough to take in an entire village. At the centre of Ogba Ukwu, is one large area said to have been the living room of the ‘god’ of Owerre-Ezukala. There is one particular compartment, accessed by the aid of stone steps where an old elephant’s foot still stands, long dead and dry. In another crevice, there is a natural spanner of rock, and in yet another is a gun of stone, as old as the cave.

It is a very beautiful site to behold, even though not much is known about the cave.

Are you from Owerre Ezeukala? Tell us more about the Ogbaukwu caves.

How many of you know about Oguta lake (green) and Orashi river (brown). The two waters has a boundary in Imo state. The fish in Oguta cannot enter Urashi and vice versa. It was reported that if you put the two waters in a bowl with its fish(s) the waters will simply separate themselves and the fishes also to their waters. It was also said that when the two waters are put in one bottle and shaken, the bottle might burst. (proven) One of the nature's wonders.

What you need to know about Okpu agu.

Do you know that the tail and positioning of Igbo hat have lots of meanings?

Are you aware that okpu agụ (leopard hat) is older than okpu ọkụ/okpu ọzọ (red hat)?
Now, pay attention start wearing our okpu agụ properly.

When the hat's tail is positioned backward it signifies danger, unhappy situation, backwardness in life.
And when positioned backwards withithout eagle🦅 feather, it signifies sorrow, burial or condolence.

Okpu agụ signifies the act of bravery in general.

When the hat's tail is positioned forward, it signifies good omen. It indicates that you are making progress in life.
And when positioned forward without eagle🦅 feather,it signifies war, warrior or brave man.

When the hat's tail is positioned right side with eagle 🦅 feather, it signifies merriment, jubilation, peace and joyful parties.

Left side without 🦅 eagle feather is for Dialogue, settlement, Accord ceremony or meetings.

My Nkwerre people of Imo state do not joke with okpu agu.

What do you know about Ogunike cave in Anambra State?

Guys..... I was there today!!
Oya read up👇👇👇👇👇

Located in a valley blanketed by tropical rain forest, the collection of caves has been in use over centuries by local people for whom it has particular spiritual significance.[2][3] This spiritual significance is still apparent, as the "Ime Ogba" celebration is undertaken every year to commemorate the discovery of the caves.[4]

Descending into the valley where the caves are located is a lengthy walkway made up of about 317 steps said to have been constructed by the Anambra State Government in the mid 90s. Visitors must remove their shoes before entering the caves, as per tradition.[2] And women who are having their monthly cycle cannot go in.

The main cave consists of a massive structure with a big open chamber of about 5m high, 10m wide and 30m long at the entrance. There are ten tunnels at the main chamber leading to different directions. Within the tunnels are big chambers and other tunnels of varying lengths, some of which are inter connected. The caves are occupied by a large colony of bats of various sizes. There are streams and body of water at various places. A stream flows out from one of the tunnels into a rapid flowing river (River Nkissa). At the meeting point of the river and the stream one can feel the warm water from the caves and the cold river water. Beside this portion of the river is a table land of about 5 X 5 square meters used as a relaxation spot by visitors to the caves. The immediate environment of the caves up to about 200 meters radius is a thick tropical rainforest type of vegetation. The site has sufficient boundaries (20 hectares) to protect its values from direct effects of human encroachment.

DO YOU KNOW AMANCHOR CAVE, EBONYI STATE

The Amanchor Cave is found in Amanchor, Afikpo South, Ebonyi State, in the country’s south-eastern region. The Cave, which is roughly 4 kilometers long, is one of Ebonyi’s major tourist attractions. The cave features a natural step-like structure at the entrance, which is supported by a wooden ladder built by the community. The Amanchor cave is made up of three tunnels, the second of which is known as the “window,” which opens onto the cave’s bottom level and allows visitors to see the cave’s floor. The “door” refers to the cave’s third opening.

On the last Orie market day of the year, in December, an annual celebration known as Orie-Ogba is held in the cave.
