Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, yet they support about 25% of all marine life! Often called the "rainforests of the sea," coral reefs provide food, shelter, and breeding grounds for thousands of species, making them some of the most important ecosystems on Earth.

But these underwater treasures are under increasing pressure from climate change, pollution, and unsustainable human activities.
Protecting coral reefs means protecting marine biodiversity, supporting coastal communities, and safeguarding the health of our oceans for future generations.

🎥 Watch this quick fun fact and discover why coral reefs matter more than you might think!

Happy World Oceans Day!

Today, we celebrate the incredible oceans that sustain life on Earth, providing food, livelihoods, climate regulation, biodiversity, and hope for future generations.

At the Nigerian Youth Biodiversity Network (NYBN), World Oceans Day is a reminder that ocean conservation is everyone's responsibility. Through awareness, advocacy, youth engagement, biodiversity conservation, and support for ecosystem restoration, we remain committed to building a healthier and more resilient ocean for people and nature.

We proudly celebrate every NYBN member, volunteer, partner, and supporter whose dedication continues to advance ocean conservation and environmental sustainability. Your passion and commitment are helping create lasting impact.
You don't need to be a marine scientist or conservation expert to make a difference. Whether it's reducing plastic use, sharing knowledge, participating in clean-up activities, supporting Marine Protected Areas, or simply becoming more environmentally conscious, your actions matter.

Protection works. Nature can recover when we give it the chance.

As we continue our countdown to World Oceans Day, today's message is clear: protecting our oceans is one of the most effective solutions to biodiversity loss, climate change, and declining fish stocks.

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are safe havens for marine life. They help restore fish populations, protect vital habitats such as coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrasses, strengthen ocean resilience to climate change, and support the livelihoods of coastal communities.

Healthy oceans are not only good for marine species; they are essential for food security, climate regulation, sustainable livelihoods, and future generations. At NYBN, we believe that conservation is an investment in our collective future. When we protect the ocean, it recovers. And when the ocean thrives, people thrive too.

Beneath the surface lies a world that sustains life on Earth.

As we count down to , we're reminded that our oceans are far more than vast bodies of water; they are biodiversity hotspots that regulate our climate, support livelihoods, provide food, and produce much of the oxygen we breathe.

From vibrant coral reefs to mangroves and seagrass ecosystems, marine habitats support countless species while protecting coastal communities and strengthening our resilience against climate change. Yet rising temperatures, pollution, habitat loss, and unsustainable human activities continue to threaten this delicate balance.

At NYBN, we believe that protecting ocean biodiversity is protecting our collective future.

🌱 Reduce plastic pollution.

🐟 Support sustainable seafood.

🌿 Protect marine habitats.

📢 Raise awareness and inspire action.

Because a healthy ocean means a healthy planet. Let's build momentum toward World Oceans Day and amplify the conversation on ocean conservation, climate action, and biodiversity protection.

The Ocean is Under Threat. And so is our future.

This World Environment Day, as we continue our countdown to World Oceans Day, we shine a spotlight on one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time>>>>>>>>>>>OCEAN POLLUTION.

What we throw away doesn't simply disappear. Plastic waste travels from our streets into rivers and eventually into our oceans, where it threatens marine life, damages ecosystems, and weakens the ocean's ability to regulate our climate.
The ocean absorbs a significant share of the carbon emissions generated by human activities, provides food and livelihoods for millions, supports biodiversity, and helps maintain the environmental balance on which we all depend. Yet, pollution, unsustainable consumption, and climate change continue to put these vital functions at risk.

At NYBN, we believe that protecting our oceans begins with informed choices, environmental responsibility, and collective action. Every plastic item refused, every waste item recycled, and every voice raised for conservation contributes to a healthier ocean and a more sustainable future. Together, let's build momentum toward World Oceans Day by turning awareness into action.

Did you know the ocean absorbs about 30% of the carbon dioxide produced by humans?

That means our oceans are helping to slow climate change every single day by acting as a giant natural carbon sink. The ocean does far more than provide food, jobs, and recreation; it also helps regulate the Earth's climate.

But healthy oceans are essential for this to continue.

The more we protect marine ecosystems, the stronger our planet's natural defenses become.

The ocean does more than sustain marine life; it sustains people.

From fisheries and transportation to tourism and coastal enterprises, millions of livelihoods depend on healthy and productive oceans. For many coastal communities, the ocean is not just a natural resource; it is a source of income, food security, and economic opportunity.

Yet, pollution, habitat degradation, and unsustainable exploitation continue to threaten the ecosystems that support these jobs and livelihoods.

Protecting our oceans means protecting families, businesses, and communities that rely on them every day.

As we continue our countdown to World Environment Day and World Oceans Day, let's recognize that a thriving ocean is essential to a thriving economy.

🍽️ That fish on your plate? It starts with a healthy ocean.

Millions of people depend on the ocean for food, livelihoods, and nutrition. In Nigeria, coastal communities rely heavily on fisheries, while fish remain a major source of protein for households across the country. Yet, overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction are putting our ocean ecosystems under increasing pressure.

Healthy oceans mean healthy fish populations. Healthy fish populations mean food security for people. As we count down to World Oceans Day, let's remember that protecting our oceans is not just about marine life; it's about safeguarding our future.
