Earlier this week, we visited some secondary schools in Umuahia to better understand the challenges they face in delivering quality education. We were joined by representatives of the Chinenye Amanamba Foundation and the ever-inspiring Mr. Kelechi Imo, Executive Director of Trajden, a true pathfinder in promoting sustainable education in rural Abia communities.
Our first stop was Ohuhu Community Secondary School (OCSS), Amaogwugwu, Umuahia. The principal warmly received us and shared both the strides the school has made and the hurdles they continue to face.
Notable acts of support:
• The Old Boys Association of OCSS have taken remarkable steps to keep the school alive. They enforce the free-education mandate by ensuring no fees are collected, provide uniforms for students, and encourage consistent enrollment.
• The President General of Amaogwugwu, Sir Kelechi Uwaoma, has faithfully paid WAEC fees for students, ensuring no child is left behind at this critical stage.
Yet, urgent needs remain:
• Basic teaching and learning materials such as chalk, markers, exam scripts, lesson notes, pens, and exercise books.
• Additional subject teachers, especially in Mathematics, to ensure students receive a well-rounded education.
Our Commitment
After engaging with our partners and sponsors, we resolved to:
• Donate exercise books to the students.
• Provide writing materials for the teachers.
• Work actively towards securing a Mathematics teacher for the school.
This intervention is particularly close to our hearts, as OCSS is in Chief Sir Dr. Chinenye Amanamba’s hometown. In his honour, we are committed to intensifying support that will not only sustain the school but also immortalize his legacy through the gift of education.
