*A MESSAGE TO THE PEOPLE OF AGOI-IBAMI: REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE*
"The Branch That Held the War Pot Must Not Break"
To Every Son and Daughter of Agoi-Ibami Hear This:
Your ancestors did not travel from Nkumokpambe through forests, rivers, and hostile territories, carrying sacred war pots on their heads, just so their children would sit in silence while their community crumbles.
They walked. They bled. They negotiated. They sacrificed.
They did all of this so that you could have a home.
And that home your home is under threat today.
Remember the Name You Carry
Every time you say the word "Ibami," you are speaking history. That name was not given carelessly. It was born the day Ojiretu, your brave warrior ancestor, cut a branch from a tree on the hillside of Ekperoh and said, "I can go no further we rest here."
That branch held the sacred war pot.
That branch gave your community its name.
That branch became your identity.
Ask yourself today: Is that branch strong enough to hold what your ancestors placed upon it?
Because right now, the bridge that connects you to the world your community's only lifeline is collapsing. Your forests are being stripped. Your gold is being taken by strangers. Your young people have no jobs. Your nights are dark. And your voices have been too quiet for too long.
The branch is bending.
Will you let it break?
Your Ancestors Were Not Passive People
Do not forget the Agoi people were known as a strong, determined, and warrior people. When tribal wars threatened them, they did not collapse. They reorganised under King Obot Ebey, formed a council, sent out hunters to find a better way, and moved an entire people to safety.
When part of the group grew tired at Rorimawon, they did not abandon the mission they adapted and continued.
When Ojiretu could go no further, the community did not scatter they gathered around him and built something new right where they stood.
That is who you are. Problem solvers. Community builders. Survivors.

The Story of Agoi-Ibami: A Community Rich in Resources, Poor in Development
Who Are the Agoi-Ibami People?
The Agoi people live in Cross River State in southern Nigeria. In this tropical climate, their means of livelihood range from subsistence agriculture to small-scale commerce and transport. Agoi-Ibami is located in the Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State, about 87 km from the state capital, Calabar. Their population stands at approximately 25,500 people.
A Land Blessed with Natural Wealth
The Agoi region is naturally endowed and heavily forested, bordered by Obubra, Etung, Biase, and Akamkpa Local Government Areas. The community sits atop extraordinary natural wealth forests, fertile farmland, and even gold deposits. Market trucks from Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, and even Benue State travel to Agoi-Ibami specifically for food products like plantains, yams, and garri, making it a critical food production hub for the region.
The Paradox: Wealth Without Development
Despite its natural abundance, Agoi-Ibami tells the classic story of a neglected rural community. Communities suffer neglect and lack social amenities that would improve life for their population, despite being a vast reservoir of forestry, gold, and other rich natural resources.
Darkness literally and figuratively: Most of these communities have been in darkness for over a decade, relying largely on generators and solar power owned by a privileged few.
No roads, no access: Enhancing transportation connectivity in the region has been described as crucial for the movement of goods, services, and people. The absence of good roads has kept the community economically isolated, despite its agricultural productivity.
The Forest: Both Lifeline and Battleground
Families rely on the forest economy for food, medicine, firewood, and housing. Yet this very forest is under severe threat. Environmental groups alleged that agribusinesses engaged in illegal logging within protected forests, etc.
