Veilomani Womens Club at the 3rd National Symposium for Community-Led Initiatives on Environment Sustainability

On a boat from Nabouono village, Talica makes her way to Labasa, then to Suva to represent the Veilomani Womens Club at a 3 day National Symposium. Her long travels is not unique to her, many of the 50 + participants that attended the symposium travelled from the outer islands to Suva to share their stories.

The Symposium on Community-Led Initiatives on Environment Sustainability is a platform that invites grant representatives from around Fiji and Rotuma to share their stories on project initiatives, being implemented within their communities πŸ–οΈπŸ₯¬πŸ„πŸ.
The discussions included success stories, challenges and creative solutions. VWC spoke under the session titled β€˜Women-led Intiatives’. The opportunity allowed for VWC to speak on their community initiative of conserving sea turtles and the progress of their cattle project.

Their story included the support of the community where they gifted an outboard motor to the VWC in support of the UNDP SGP project and in acknowledging all that the women had done for their community. This act led to a 1 week training for representatives from the Udu district with participates receiving their respective Boat Master Licenses. VWC and the surrounding communities have continued to receive trainings, as well as a series of development activities as outputs to the sea turtle conservation project.

Talica who at first admitted that she was shy to communicate with fellow attendees quickly made new friends and is looking forward to the field visit to the Kalokolevu biodiversity park 🌴🌳πŸͺΊπŸ¦œtoday, Friday 26th September 2025.

Cattle stockyard at Nabouono village, Udu, Vanua levu, Fiji.

The cattle stockyard enclosure was completed by the men and women of Nabouono village further supporting the ongoing activity of cattle management.

A cattle stockyard is an enclosure that works as a temporary housing for handling as well as controlling the movement of cattle. The infrastructure was discussed during an awareness visit by the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) at Nabouono village earlier this year, with MoA staff assisting in the preliminary set up of the stockyard. The community with support from WWF Fiji completed the cattle stockyard that will assist in the recommended management of cattle within the community. πŸ„ πŸ„

The community initiative on the conservation of sea turtles through provision of an alternative source of protein, is funded by the UNDP Small Grants UNDP GEF Small Grants Programme Fiji(2024). The VWC also acknowledges the great support provided by the WWF Fiji office throughout the project implementation period πŸ‘.

The community efforts not only impact the survival of a species significant to traditional fijian customs and culture, the conservation effort would also influence the good health of Fiji's largest barrier reef, that is the Great Sea Reef or Cakaulevu. Cakaulevu is acknowledged to be the world’s third longest barrier reef system, stretching over 450 kilometers. πŸͺΈ πŸͺΈ
