Yesterday marked a significant milestone as we officially opened the 16th Biennial International Society of Paediatric Oncology - SIOP Africa Continental Congress 2026 in Lagos, Nigeria.
It was a powerful and inspiring ceremony that brought together leaders, clinicians, researchers, advocates, and partners from across Africa and beyond all united by one goal: improving outcomes for children with cancer.
We were deeply honoured by the presence of The Executive Governor of Lagos State His Excellency Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu represented by The Honourable Commisioner of Health Prof. Akin Abayomi, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare in Nigeria is Dr. Dr. Iziaq Kunle Salako represented by Professor John Oladapo Obafunwa, Director-General (DG) of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) , Prof. Usman Aliyu Director General (DG) of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) in Nigeria
and other national and state health leaders, whose participation underscores the growing commitment to strengthening cancer care systems across the continent.
The opening ceremony set the tone for the days ahead highlighting the urgency of early detection, equitable access to care, strong health systems, and the critical role of collaboration in transforming childhood cancer outcomes in Africa.
As conversations continue throughout the Congress, one thing remains clear:
Africa is not just participating in the global childhood cancer agenda, we are actively shaping it.
Grateful to everyone who made this possible and to all delegates who have travelled from across the world to be part of this moment.
