International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025

Theme: "Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress"

Today, we join the global community to reaffirm our commitment to creating a world where every individual, regardless of ability, is seen, valued and supported to thrive.

At Damar Place Learning Foundation, we believe that true progress is only possible when no one is left behind.

Through awareness, advocacy and intervention, we continue to support neurodivergent individuals and children with additional needs, fostering environments that are inclusive, accessible and affirming.

Disability inclusion is not charity...

It is equity.
It is justice.
It is progress.

Together we can intentionally build systems that break barriers, celebrate differences, and promote dignity for all.

October is extra special because it is Dyslexia Awareness Month. This is a time to shine a light on a topic that affects so many of our students and families. I'd like to take a moment to share information and resources that help us better understand dyslexia and how to support students who may experience it.

Dyslexia is rooted in differences in how the brain processes language, most often involving phonological (sound) processing, and sometimes morphological (word structure) processing as well. These differences can make reading and spelling feel harder to master, even for bright, capable learners.

Even if none of your students have an official diagnosis, chances are youโ€™re already teaching children with dyslexia.

Research suggests that as many as 1 in 5 people have characteristics of dyslexia, though not all are formally identified. Reason being that, dyslexia exists on a spectrum, it can look different from student to student and can range from mild to more impacted.
The more we understand dyslexia, the better equipped we are to make reading accessible to all learners.

Neurodiversity Awareness Week

This year's theme is โ€œDo You See Me?โ€

This week, we raise our voices, our hearts and our hands for every child and adult with Neurodivergent conditions.

This is more than a question. It's a challenge to every educator, leader, policymaker and parent.

Itโ€™s a call for visibility.
A cry for empathy.
A plea for equity.
And most importantly, a reminder that behind every diagnosis and label is a person with ability, with potential, with a voice that matters.

Neurodiversity encompasses various neurotypes, including both neurotypical and neurodivergent individuals, highlighting the diversity in human brain function and structure.

At Damar Place Learning Foundation, we are committed to:

โœ… Recognizing individual strengths
โœ… Creating inclusive spaces in schools and communities
โœ… Designing personalized structured interventions
โœ… Equipping educators and parents through training to see beyond the surface
โœ… Supporting children and young adults with Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dyspraxia, Dysgraphia, ADHD, Down Syndrome, Autism and more, not with pity, but with purpose.
โœ… Collaborate with stakeholders to champion advocacy amplify voices, identify potential and celebrate differences.

Letโ€™s shift the conversation from โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong with you?โ€ to โ€œWhat do you need to thrive?โ€

Because yes, We See You - the strengths and struggles, and we stand with you.

For inquiry on support and collaboration, please send an email to: [email protected]

On Saturday, I had the honour of speaking at the Exceptional Girls International Conference, hosted by Roseline Aigbokhan of on the powerful topic, 'From Stigma to Support: Empowering Girls to Champion Disability Inclusion, Tackle Bullying and Respect Differences'.

It was an engaging and enlightening session with a vibrant group of young changemakers. I shared how they can Go 'MAD: - Make A Difference, in their schools and communities by embracing four simple but powerful actions:

1. Start with Respect โ€“ in words, actions, and mindset, knowing everyone deserves dignity.
2. Tackle Bullying with Courage โ€“ speak up, support others and never stay silent in the face of exclusion.
3. Include with Intention โ€“ make the effort to reach out, connect, and learn about others' unique needs and strengths.
4. Lead with Change โ€“ use your voice to promote empathy, inclusion and acceptance.

The energy, curiosity and commitment from the girls were deeply inspiring.

Iโ€™m hopeful for a future where young women serve and lead boldly with kindness and inclusion at the core.

If youโ€™d like me to speak at your school, event or organization on Neurodiversity, Inclusion or Supporting Learners with Differences, please feel free to get in touch. Letโ€™s build a more inclusive world together.
